A depiction of a Roman Hastati. These were from the early to mid Republic period, when Roman Legions were still using the Maniple system. In this system, the poorest and least experienced soldiers were the Hastati, and were the first in the Roman formation to engage the enemy, with layers of more experienced soldiers behind them.
