lots of them in the HOF !

The University of Maine baseball program will proudly celebrate its rich tradition and championship legacy by honoring all seven of its College World Series teams as part of 'Legends Weekend'. Members of each team will be welcomed back to Orono and introduced on field as part of a pregame ceremony on Saturday, May 15 when the Black Bears host UAlbany at 1 p.m.

1964: The 1964 University of Maine baseball team, coached by UMaine Hall of Fame member Jack Butterfield and led by a group of sophomores, won the Yankee Conference championship with an 8-2 record, then upset favored Northeastern, 9-5 and 4-2, at Fenway Park to advance to the College World Series. There, the upstart Black Bears became the darlings of Omaha, defeating Seton Hall, 5-1, losing to eventual champion Minnesota, 12-0, then beating Arizona State, 4-2, and Southern California, 2-1, to advance to the championship round, where they lost, 2-1, to Missouri, which subsequently lost the title game to Minnesota. Butterfield was awarded the NCAA Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association while Joe Ferris, undefeated in three CWS games, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series while captain David Thompso hit safely in every game to earn a spot on the all-CWS team. Ferris finished the season with a 9-0 mark while Thompson and Dick DeVarney each hit .333 and Carl Merrill, who later became the manager of the New York Yankees, batted .327. The trip marked Maine's first to the College World Series.

cool old shot. World Series resumes tonight!

Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, PA, October 13, 1960 - In Game Seven of 1960 World Series against the New York Yankees, the Pirates immortal hero Bill Mazeroski can be seen rounding third base after his 9th-inning walk-off home run gave the Bucs a 10-9 win and delivered Pittsburgh its first title since 1925 and sending the city into a state of euphoria.

It was an odd series in that despite losing the series, the Yankees did outscore the Pirates 55-27 in the seven games and 38-3 in their three wins.

Take note of home plate umpire Bill Jackowski futile attempt to keep a clear path for Mazeroski to touch home where you can see Roberto Clemente ( #21) waiting.. Also, apparently the Yankees entrance to their clubhouse was not through the visitors dugout but the Pirates meaning they had to cross a madhouse to get to safety.

Portland Stadium. Park Avenue. Portland, Maine. May 12, 1947.

Portland Pilots' Lou Tuminelli crosses home plate and is met by Tommy Siok, team Captain Paul Gaulin, and Johnny Dennis, in the 5th inning.

The Portland Pilots would drop the game 6-3 to the Manchester Giants.

Portland Stadium was located in the same spot as Hadlock field is located today. At the very edge of the left side of the photograph you can just make out the top of the hose tower of Portland's Park Avenue Fire House.
