Everyone’s calling it a 504-pound bluefin. The scale actually said 446.

Both are right.

Bluefin get weighed, dressed, gills and guts out, because that’s how they’re handled at the dock. To estimate the whole fish, you add roughly 13% back, which gets you 504. One number is a measurement. The other number is arithmetic.

Everyone’s calling it El Niño at the dock.

NOAA Fisheries says not yet.

The warm water we’re seeing now is a marine heatwave. El Niño was declared in June, but the West Coast effects lag by months.

That matters because yellowfin peaked early this year: 240 per 1000 anglers in August 2026 versus 136 in September 2025.

And bluefin may still have room. Last year, October beat September.

That’s my yellowtail off the Horizon, June 8th. I know the date and vessel because it’s on the card. Otherwise I’d be guessing and I already am on my PB Vermillion from last summer.

Surface iron when they’re boiling on top. Yo-yo iron when they’re marked deep. Fly-lined bait when they’re scattered or picky.

SoCal sportfishing bite report — the bluefin are back in the fish counts and the rockfish bite is wide open. The Apollo’s running a two-day out of Seaforth that’s been on the tuna, with spots open this weekend.

This week felt different.
Bluefin numbers climbed hard across Southern California, with 878 bluefin landed over the last 3 days across 16 landings. Pacific Queen put 168 tuna on the deck in one trip, while multiple San Diego boats continued to stack fish on overnight and multi-day runs.
At the same time, rockfish kept producing volume across the fleet — more than 6,900 landed this week for anglers who wanted action closer to home.
The patterns are there heading into the weekend.
