Gold Mountain Forge

A contemporary, yet classical sword making studio started in 1987 owned and operated by David Goldberg, AKA Kinzan. Gold Mountain Forge produces contemporary master level Japanese weaponry. Everything from small self-defense carry "Zanto", (a term he coined for his "Ready Knife") to the longest traditional Daito sword. Making Tanto, Wakizashi, Katana, Tachi, Naginata, Nagama

ki, Yari, & Shikomi-Zue. He specializes in unique blade designs, with individually unique metallurgy and hardening techniques for his discerning clientele. Kinzan himself, along with the help and support of Master Samurai Swordsman, Christoper Ronald Garland test each prototype blade for balance, sharpness, edge holding, strength, formability, and longevity. With his vast knowledge, and years of experience in both bladesmithing and martial arts, Kinzan understands how a blade should look, feel, and perform. Kinzan believes that "The Truth exists", When it comes to classic historically correct designs or unique modern design adaptations, the edged weapon must be judged for its true intended purpose and function, as well as its intrinsic beauty.

Hello Friends!
I am happy to announce to you that there is a cool new show on History Channel it aired last night! if you missed it, you can stream the premier episode at historychannel.com
here is the link:
http://www.history.com/shows/forged-in-fire
It is an 8 episode competition blade smithing series playing every Monday for the next seven weeks.
The concept is where master bladesmiths are pitted against one another to create blades within a given timeframe. Much like in other competition reality shows, there are challenges that must be met with certain parameters set by a challenge team. Each week there are 4 different smiths with different challenges. It is an elimination process, where the blades are judged by a panel of blade, and martial arts experts. After each challenge, one smith is eliminated until in the end one smith prevails triumphant!
"There can be only one"
I am also happy to let you know that I was chosen to be in the series! I will be in Episode 5 airing July 20th. Last nights episode was the forging of a Katana.
I was not chosen for this particular episode because of the unfair advantage I would bring being a professional Japanese Swordsmith. It was a great episode!
Please be sure to watch it and tell all of your friends! pass the word~ Every episode has cool and different blade making challenges. I do not know who is on any of the other episodes or any of the results. I will watch to find out just like you. I am also not at liberty to reveal any of the challenges or results of the episode I am in of course.
I've posted this link for you to see the first episode and get an idea of what to expect. I am in some of the trailers for a split second watch close!
Thank for spreading the word!

Working in the forge tonite...I hardened three Tanto Blades ...I had a 100 percent success! This is rare... typically there is a 10 to 20 percent failure rate. Even the most accomplished master smiths break 1 out of 5 blades. All three blades are hard without failure, cracks or flaw. They are made from Tamahagane steel, granulated iron sand. It is the traditional way of making Japanese steel. Smelted in a "Tatara" (furnace) A Traditional Japanese clay furnace.
Once Smelted I reform and stack the billet, then hammer it into steel in the forge through a folding process.
Folded for purification to create the perfectly balanced steel at .7 percent carbon content. Once the billet is folded, purified and complete, I forge out a bar, then shape the blade.
I will show the process in a future video for all to see!
