The exhibit has ended, and this space will continue to preserve and share SFAAA history, including oral interviews. Beginning Friday, September 12, 2025, and running through Sunday, November 2, 2025, the Stonewall National Museum, Archives, and Library will host Balls, Bats, and Family: The History of the South Florida Amateur Athletic Association (SFAAA), a landmark exhibit celebrating over three
decades of LGBTQ+ sports, community, and connection. This exhibit brings to life the rich history and enduring impact of SFAAA through video testimonials, archival photographs, memorabilia, and a comprehensive timeline of league milestones. Visitors will also experience a Hall of Fame tribute and a memorial section honoring cherished members who have passed. Including a special tribute to SFAAA player and MLB outfielder Billy Bean.
“Balls, Bats, and Family isn’t just about softball,” said Rocky Bowell, 2025 SFAAA Commissioner. “It’s about belonging, resilience, and how a league became a chosen family for so many in South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community.”
The exhibit includes stories from past and present players, supporters, and advocates who helped shape the league’s identity and foster a safe, inclusive space for LGBTQ+ athletes and allies. An opening reception is planned for Friday, September 12th at 6:30pm.
“We never imagined when we started this league that it would grow into something so meaningful for so many,” said Jim Stork, one of SFAAA’s founding members. “It was, and still is, about more than the game — it was about creating a family and a safe space to be ourselves. Unbeknownst to many of us at the time, this league came into our lives when we needed it the most.”
