Every once in a while, I catch myself standing off to the side and just looking around.
And today, I did exactly that.
Not at the equipment. Not at how much this little gym has grown. Not at all the things we’ve added, rearranged, squeezed into corners, tripped over, cussed at, and somehow found room for.
I looked at the PEOPLE.
And dang.
I built a gym I’m incredibly proud of, but somewhere along the way, we built something much bigger than a gym.
We built The Hive.
There are different ages, different backgrounds, different fitness levels, different goals and completely different walks of life under this roof. Some of you are lifting heavy. Some are modifying. Some are running. Some are walking. Some are lying on the floor questioning every decision that led you here.
And somehow, it works.
Because when you walk through those doors, none of that other stuff matters. You become a piece of this community.
I see the early-morning crews stumbling in before the sun has even considered getting out of bed. I see the after-work crew showing up tired after giving their day to everyone else. I see people encouraging each other, laughing at each other, talking smack, celebrating PRs, checking on the person beside them and occasionally giving me a look that strongly suggests my programming has personally offended them.
And I LOVE IT.
Strength isn’t just what’s on the bar in this place.
It’s the person who walked in nervous and eventually found their confidence.
It’s the person who couldn’t do something six months ago and suddenly can.
It’s the one having a hard day who showed up anyway.
It’s the friendships that probably never would have happened anywhere else.
It’s the ridiculous amount of sass packed into one metal building.
And it’s every single person who decided to become part of this crazy little thing I started because I simply wasn’t ready to quit.
So tonight, I just want to say thank you.
Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for trusting me.
Thank you for welcoming the new person.
Thank you for encouraging the person beside you.
Thank you for the laughs, the sass, the sweat, the occasional inappropriate commentary and the constant reminder that fitness can be hard without taking ourselves too seriously.
Most of all, thank you for being your piece of The Hive.
Because I may have built the gym…
but all of you built the community.
And standing back watching it all tonight reminded me of something I don’t say nearly enough:
I was meant to do this.
And I’m so damn grateful I get to do it with all of you.
THE HIVE
Built different.
Trained different.
And apparently incapable of being quiet.
