We have already received several inquiries this year from photographers, or have been tagged in posts, seeking lambs for Easter photo sessions. We wanted to take a moment to share a friendly and informative PSA for those considering this type of request.

Farms are working businesses, just like photography businesses. Caring for lambs during a photo session requires significant time, labor, and responsibility from the owner, often for extended periods. Just as photographers would not be expected to provide multiple full days of services at no cost, it is important to recognize that asking a farm to supply animals, supervision, and care without fair compensation places a similar burden on the farmer. If you are requesting lambs for a session, please be prepared to offer appropriate financial compensation for the time, care, and resources involved. While we appreciate the gesture, trading a photo session valued at $100 to $200 is typically not an equivalent exchange for the level of work required from the farm.

Additionally, the well-being of the animals must always come first. Lambs are not props or toys. Removing young lambs from their mothers can be stressful and potentially dangerous, especially for extended periods. Most lambs are not bottle-fed and rely entirely on their mothers for nourishment. In these cases, lambs should never be separated from their mothers for more than one to two hours, and often the ewe must remain nearby. This adds additional responsibility and labor for the owner and should be considered when making requests.

We appreciate photographers who take the time to understand these realities and work collaboratively and respectfully with farms. My best advice is to find a bottle lamb for this type of work. Thoughtful planning, fair compensation, and animal welfare go a long way in creating positive experiences for everyone involved.
