Some things to think about...

Social media has become part of everyday life. But you must be extremely careful with what you post on the Internet if you've been involved in a cycling accident and are pursuing a personal injury case.

If I am not mistaken, I was elected President for Life of the Pedal Pack of the P*e Dee. Back when we collected dues, held rides, and raised money in other ways unknown to me, a bank account was opened. I am the only one still in the area who can withdraw funds from that account. I plan to donate $500 to the Schoolhouse Trust on behalf of area cyclists during their fundraiser this weekend. I have mentioned my intentions to a few members and have heard no objections.

That time again (repost from Bubba and me):

Guys and Girls: the time has changed and the Tuesday/Thursday night rides start this week at 530 on Tuesday. Tuesday Night includes the "Practice Race" which has been going since the late 80's. I first participated in 1988 before I moved back to Florence. Anyway I am posting Paul's description of the Tuesday Night Ride from last year:

Tue/Thu rides Pocket Rd rides should start this week! Figured I would post some general rules/guidelines for the Tuesday Night Ride:
Ride starts at 5:30 from the schoolhouse. If you plan to start with the group, please get there early enough to be ready to ride at 5:30. Don’t expect/make everybody wait on you! This is really not a beginner ride. We will take it a little easy initially but you need to be able to ride a reasonable pace in a group; more on pacing below. The main rule is RIDE SAFE; there is traffic on the road and we should ride respectfully. Don’t take up the whole road; generally stay to the right no more than 2-abreast.
We will leave to the right from the schoolhouse parking lot. The first segment, counter-clockwise, to Mechanicsville is designed to be a warm-up. Do not take of like a rocket from the start; it should be a conversational pace. We should try not to drop anyone but if you don’t feel comfortable maintaining ~18mph in a group, this is probably not for you! At Mechanicsville, lately, the group has been splitting up into a “race” group and a “touring” group (for lack of better descriptions). I think both loops work out to about 30 miles.
The “touring” group will continue on Hwy 34 and I believe make a loop similar to the Sunday afternoon loop. I haven’t followed this group before so don’t know all the details. I think they will try to be sure no one is left behind but still remember this is not a beginner pace.
The “race” group will turn left to head back to Pocket Rd. The pace may pick up a little but it should still not be max-effort pedaling. Once this group gets to the 4-way stop sign, then all limits are off. We should make sure everyone is together before turning right on Pocket Rd so everyone has a fair chance from the beginning. From there, we’ll make a clockwise ~18 mile loop back to the schoolhouse. This is NOT a no-drop loop. If you get dropped you are on your own. If you don’t know the loop, let the others know so you can get some help.

The Thursday night ride was a time trial in the late 80's and early 90's and then sort of fizzled. It started back in the late 90's as a beginner ride but that didn't last long. For the past 10 years or so, it has become a steady paced group ride that seems to get faster as the season progresses and people become more fit. For the past few years, it has used the Sunday afternoon route. Sometimes, it breaks into two speed groups. many get racy when we get back to Georgetown road. We always wait around afterwards to make sure everyone gets in. Rumor has it that beer drinking may occur during this wait period. Hope to see lists of people out this week. Weather is going to be good. See you on the road.

It's time once again for the SC Senior Sports Classic (aka: Senior Games). This year the cycling events are Tue and Wed (5/16-17). This year the event schedule calls for a 20KM road race on Tuesday; I do not know what the actual format will be. Then on Wednesday there are the traditional 5KM and 10KM individual time trials. As always these events are open to all senior 50 and over which seems to be most of the cycling population in this area. Check out their website for more information and register. After being an "official" for ~10 years, I know our local cycling population could dominate the medal podium!

GROUP RIDE ETIQUETTE, EXPECTATIONS, OWNERSHIP, AND THE RIDE HIJACKER(S)

Guys and Girls:

I was reminded this of my chronic pain years, 2009-2011, when I wasn't riding as well or as comfortably as now. Monday marks the 5th anniversary of my hip replacement which improved things dramatically and let me slide into late middle age a little more gracefully. Before my surgery, I had developed a nasty lung infection that took doctors some time to get a handle on. I would have coughing fits and because of those, I was unable to exercise. According to my logs, I did not ride a bike or swim between November 6, 2010 and January 21, 2011 when I did a 36 mile ride. That is probably about 10 weeks. My first ride was the Sunday Southside ride which no longer exists. That ride was started by Brian Franklin and in the beginning was a recovery ride. Guys and girls would show up and ride at a steady almost social pace for 35 miles or so. We usually had a little speed session the last few miles down Bannockburn Road as the wind was at our back. We would then go back to Southside school and if Steve Murphy showed up, we may have a beer or two. Eventually, faster guys started showing up and if no girls showed, it would turn into a hammerfest. You never knew what to expect. When I showed on 1/21/16, it was all guys and I may have been dropped. That ride eventually fizzled. It was Brian's ride and he had moved by then. The ride had been highjacked by then and most riders weren't looking for a fast paced Sunday afternoon ride, so they quit showing up.

You may have noticed on Facebook that I rode with the group from Fire Station five last Sunday. I had seen that ride posted all summer and wanted to join in but 730 was a little early for me. The ride looked fun. I showed up last Sunday and it was cold so the crowd wasn't big, but I was welcomed by Dorothy and Dave and jumped right in. I also met Herb and Ted. I was on my single speed. We rode about 14 to 16 mph for 20 miles or so. The ride was shortened by my flat tire. I'm not trying to brag but I May have been able to drop the whole group although Dave would have given me a run for my money with his booster motor. But, I was a guest at someone else's ride, knew what to expect going in, didn't have any agenda to impose on the group, and most importantly, had a nice ride and time.

I'm sitting here now getting ready for the Saturday shop ride. That's my ride. I have been doing it since at least 1991. It was meant to be a steady 18-20 mph group ride with stronger riders helping out others, has been that way for 25 years. We do do a little speed run into the store, especially when we have a tail wind but then loop back and help others in. I was there last week, the ride was small as it was real cold. It was slower but smooth. We usually slow down in the winter. I wasn't there the week before and heard the ride was highjacked, someone with a different training agenda kept lifting the pace and spread the group all over the road. People were mad as their expectations were not met. When riders don't know what to expect, they quit showing up, rides fizzle, groups fizzle.

A few weeks ago, I gave a little talk before the ride trying to explain what we have been trying to do with the Saturday ride. Don't expect the ride to slow down to 15 if you can't hang on. If 18-20 to is not fast enough for you, you need to go somewhere else. We race on Tuesday nights, beginning in March, not on Saturday mornings in December. If you think going to front, lifting the pace, spreading the group all over the road impresses anyone, you're wrong. It just shows you never read those articles we post on pace line etiquette, shows you don't get it, or maybe just shows you're an ass.

According to my sources, there will be a ride on Thanksgiving morning leaving the bike shop at 8am. In addition, there will be a ride on Friday morning at 8am as well. I will be busy on Thursday but plan on riding on Friday. On Saturday, the shop ride goes off at 9am with an 8am loop option. I will be unable to ride on Saturday as I will be witnessing the biggest college football upset in SC history in Columbia, larger even than last week's upset in Columbia. Weather looks good. Put in some miles.

Guys and Girls: as you know, the Ride Like a Nut is scheduled for this Saturday, leaving the Fitness Forum at 830am. It currently looks like the rain is going to hold off until late Saturday so the weather should not be a problem. May be a little hot for this time of the year. Because of the Nut ride, there will not be a bike shop ride this Saturday. I encourage everyone to support Ride Like a Nut.
Starting next Saturday, November 14, 2015, the Saturday morning shop ride will move to 9am as we do during winter months. There will still be a group leaving at 8am and I believe they do a 15 or so mile loop and meet the group leaving at 9am. The Sunday morning ride continues to go off at 8am throughout the winter. Also, there is a 2pm ride on Sunday Afternoon leaving from the schoolhouse on Pocket Road. If you are going to sneak out of work during the week and ride, please post so others can join. Look forward to riding with the crowd throughout the winter.
