Let me tell you about the rarest creature in youth baseball: the "For the Kids" Coach.

He’s an endangered species, a rare breed you're lucky to spot in the wild.
You'll know him when you see him.
He's the one who values arm care over plastic trophies and develops the bottom of the lineup as much as the top.
He seems immune to the noise of sideline gossip and the pressure of parking lot politics.

He teaches life lessons disguised as baseball drills, and his post-game talk is the same after a blowout win or a heartbreaking loss.
He's the first to the field and the last to leave.

But his habitat is shrinking. He is becoming critically endangered, threatened by the corrosive effects of a 'win-at-all-costs' culture.

So if you are lucky enough to have one for your son's team, understand what you have.
Protect him. And every once in a while, tell him thank you.

He needs the encouragement to survive.
