11 Things That Are Stopping You Winning Races

1. Training fasted. People think this burns fat, but it actually burns through muscle and leads to early glycogen depletion.
2. Every hard session flat out. Leaves nothing in reserve for the races that actually need your best effort.
3. Eating less on recovery days. Your body still needs a caloric load to repair and fuel the training ahead.
4. Avoiding strength training. Thinking it’ll make you bulky. You need that muscle to reduce injury risk and support performance.
5. Masking fatigue with caffeine. It covers the symptom without ever addressing why you’re tired in the first place.
6. Relying on GP blood tests. They don’t give you the level of detail needed to understand what’s actually happening in your body.
7. Comparing yourself to someone else’s Strava. Their recovery, genetics and training history are nothing like yours.
8. Training through illness. Pushing through often costs you far more recovery time than just resting would.
9. Ignoring hydration until you’re thirsty. By that point you’re already behind and performance has already dropped.
10. Following AI or influencer training blocks. Built for someone else’s body, recovery capacity and lifestyle.
11. Not practising race day nutrition. Then wondering why your gut can’t handle it when it actually matters.

Save this so you don’t forget it.

What does 90g of carbs actually look like? Hint, it’s more than you think.

Most athletes underfuel without even realising it. They train hard, race hard, and consistently fall short on carbohydrate intake, then wonder why they crash mid session, hit the wall in races, or feel completely burnt out week after week.

Fuelling for the work required isn’t optional, it’s the difference between finishing strong and falling apart when it matters most.

Most nutrition advice treats every option as either good or bad. The truth is almost always more specific than that.

Context changes everything. What works before a race isn’t the same as what works day to day. What’s efficient for recovery isn’t the same as what’s efficient for general health. Even something as simple as fat source can make a measurable difference depending on quality and processing.

Small, informed choices like these add up over a season far more than people expect.

Nobody tells you this stuff early enough.

Fasted training, low fat diets, maximal effort every session, an untested gut, generic protein, a GP blood panel that says everything’s fine. Every single one of these quietly limits performance for years before anyone connects the dots.

The good news is none of it requires guesswork once you actually test for it.

Every cyclist needs these 5 things.

It’s easy to assume the difference between good cyclists and great ones comes down to talent or hours on the bike. It rarely does. The athletes who keep improving year after year are usually the ones who’ve stopped treating recovery, mindset and nutrition as optional extras and started treating them as seriously as the training itself.
