FMS Spring Robotics has begun! We had a great first night with 50 students and incredible adult volunteers! Students applied robotics and engineering to the Olympic sport of curling! In a matter of 30 mins students built, designed a code and created robots that acted as curling stones to stop right on target!

The EWSD Board recently recognized the students and mentors from the EWSD Robotics program, which saw a remarkable nine district teams compete this season. They also highlighted the five teams from Founders Memorial, Westford, and Essex Middle School that qualified for the State Championship, including one team that brought home a state trophy. đŸ€–đŸ™Œ

These students spent countless hours sharpening skills like critical thinking, adaptability, and teamwork. The EWSD Board also thanked the dedicated mentors for their leadership.

Congratulations to all four of our teams who participated at the state qualifier event in December. As four first year teams, and some of the youngest teams at the competition, you all scored very competitively! Special thanks to our dedicated coaches for an incredible season! We are cheering on the Milky Way Falcons and the Bot Builders as they participate in the state championship this coming Saturday.

Check. Come support our four teams this Sunday, November 16th at Westford Elementary School at 1pm. Teams from Westford, Founders and Fairfield will be participating in a scrimmage to test out their robots, coding and innovation. They will be there to answer all the questions you have about robotics!

Our teams began work on our competition robot projects today. Students worked together to plan, build, and make adjustments. They huddled over laptops debating code, tested, made more tweaks and tried more code, tested some more
and then from the competition board: a roar of spontaneous cheers! Get ready Vermont FIRST Robotics, our scrappy first year start up teams are on their way!

We thought we’d have to waitlist an entire team of students due to the far beyond anticipated sign-ups. Then we found Jon, a parent with professional experience who stepped up to volunteer as a lead coach. Thanks to him and our other volunteer coaches, every student seeking a robotics competition team spot was able to be placed!

Jon is at every single practice, empowering his team with his expertise, insight, and patience. Beyond the dedication of the greatest amount of volunteer hours, Jon saw the need for more start-up LEGO SPIKE kits for better student access to coding, so he donated not one but two kits to overcome our growing pains. So many of our program highlights and innovative lightbulb moments are thanks to Jon!

In the nonprofit world, volunteers who jump in to bridge gaps are considered unicorns due to how rare and special they are. FMS Robotics is so lucky to have somehow found a veritable herd of unicorns, like Jon, who have already invested so much to provide this incredible STEM opportunity to FMS students.

Thank you to Jon and to all our unicorn parents and supporters of our growing program!

Students rose to the occasion to code autonomous robots tackling specific corner turns tonight! They used rulers, protractors, math, and coding to send their robot around a variety of specifically angled curves and corners. A 90 degree turn may seem simple, but requires a ton of thought, planning, teamwork
and of course creativity in this chicken-themed example đŸ“đŸ€–đŸ“đŸŠŸ

THANK YOU Maple Tree Biomedical LLC for not just supporting the health of our schools and our community, but jumping in to fill critical equipment needs!

When Andrew with Maple Tree Biomedical heard that our program needed more start up coding kits, he reached out in under a minute to fill that gap with a $2000 donation. He had zero hesitation or delay to meet equipment needs. Thanks to this tangible, timely gift, our program will be able to expand coding and robotics opportunities for students who otherwise would not have access.

From keeping healthcare equipment calibrated to providing the equipment needed for student STEM access, we are so grateful to have Maple Tree Biomedical in our community!

THANK YOU Propel AI! Woody with Propel AI was the first person after our first informational meeting to offer program support. He immediately recognized the need to invest in start-up equipment needs in order to get our program off the ground.

Propel AI’s $900 gift helped launch FMS Robotics and get kids learning and coding! We are so grateful to local experts in their fields, like Woody, ready to meaningfully create pathways for student futures in STEMs. Thank you!!
