As National Volunteers’ Week comes to a close, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of our incredible volunteers here at Sport for Confidence. 🙏

Your time, energy, and kindness make a real difference every day—supporting people to build confidence, improve wellbeing, and access meaningful opportunities in their communities. We simply couldn’t do what we do without you.

Volunteering doesn’t just benefit others; it also brings so much in return. It can boost confidence, build new skills, reduce isolation, improve wellbeing, and create a real sense of purpose and connection. At the same time, it strengthens local communities by bringing people together and helping more people feel included and supported.

To every one of our volunteers—thank you for the compassion, commitment, and positivity you bring. You are truly valued, this week and every week. 💗

We're delighted to share that Sport for Confidence, in partnership with Essex Carers Network, has secured funding from the Southend, Essex and Thurrock Learning Disability and Autism Health Equalities Programme to purchase 12 specialist weighing scales designed for wheelchair users, addressing a long-standing gap in equitable access to basic health monitoring across Essex.

Too often, wheelchair users face barriers that limit access to physical activity, community spaces, and opportunities that support health and wellbeing. This funding will enable us to work alongside wheelchair users, partners, and communities to better understand these challenges and develop meaningful solutions that create fairer access for all.

Creating healthier, more inclusive communities starts with listening, learning, and taking action. We’re excited to take this next step and continue our mission of using physical activity as a vehicle for empowerment, equity, and belonging.

This funding builds on Sport for Confidence's wider commitment to tackling inequalities in health, wellbeing and access to physical activity across Essex.

This week is National Volunteers Week and we are celebrating our amazing group of volunteers who give up there time to support our teams at our community sites across Essex and London! 🙏

We invited our volunteers to share something about their experience of volunteering in any way they chose, and we absolutely love this fantastic drawing from Kieran, who volunteers at Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre in Havering 🎨

Kieran’s artwork captures the fun, energy and variety of activities enjoyed during our Multi Sports sessions, including football, basketball, hockey and cricket.

A huge thank you to Kieran, and to every one of our volunteers, for the time, care and positivity you bring to our sessions. Your support helps create welcoming, inclusive spaces where people feel seen, valued and connected.

As part of our systemwide approach to physical activity, our Occupational Therapist & National Lead for Learning Lisa Westhorpe attended Tees Active ’s dynamic Care Home Legends event at Thornaby Pavillion recently.

This fantastic event brought together care home residents and staff from across Stockton, with care home staff and Teesside University sity occupational therapy staff and students supporting participation in a wide variety of activities planned by Teesside Active’s community engagement team. This was the second year Teesside University occupational therapy students had attended to support the ways to be active, and highlighted collaborative work across the system in Stockton to support the needs of those who are traditionally furthest away from physical activity opportunities.

In addition to developing their communication skills and therapeutic use of self to support care home residents to participate, Teesside University occupational therapy students also met with Stockton Borough Councillor & Cabinet Member for Health & Social Care Pauline Beall, discussing the importance of occupational therapy as part of a multidisciplinary approach to meeting the needs of the local community. The occupational therapy students are now planning more visits to local physical activity opportunities, increasing their knowledge of local physical activity provision for when they graduate as the next generation of health and social care professionals.

Thanks to Tees Active for an inspiring event which demonstrated how we can make reducing physical inactivity fun, and the power of meaningful movement! 🙌
