I’m back working on my game again with my focus to get better, but mostly to just keep the neck healthy. I’ve got too much positive lateral force - causing my upper to ‘hang back’ and making it difficult to rotate through impact. This then requires me to back out a little to deliver the club with a strong release - something that I’m pretty good at most of the time, but when the timing is off it’s really bad. More so this causes the neck flareups and then sidelines good golf again.
I asked Christian () to take a look and experiment with me. Having a new set of eyes and a fresh look almost always brings new ideas. In this lesson we worked on taking away some of the positive lateral (yes, sometimes you can have too much GRFs if it’s the wrong matchup) and turning it into torque force - the rotational forces.
Goals - using our force plates , keep positive horizontal around the 20% of bw, but don’t let it get too high (30%). Feel centered in backswing, downswing starts with lowering of left shoulder, max torque force from ground to create big ribcage rotation, get head to release.
The feels are absolutely crazy to me - I feel like I’m just turning around my lead leg and then chopping down on the ball. Obviously that’s not the case, as I’m still in tour average for positive lateral even though I feel like I don’t even push with my trail side. But, the Torque spikes, the AoA comes down, the path neutralizes and spin gets more appropriate (higher for me).
Now, to be honest after this session my body yelled at me....but not from my neck. It was from my low back and adductors. Not surprising, these were areas that I hadn’t been using in the swing. So, I’ve focused the gym work around this and the last week the swing has been feeling pretty good. I like this strategy a ton right now. I feel that good golf is right around the corner.
Still on the list to fix is the ‘long’ backswing. It’s more of a strength issue with the arms/wrists that cause that club to wrap around.
