The Warden's Worry, my favorite classic Maine streamer for Landlocked Atlantic Salmon. Letting your mind wander and create some variations of a single base pattern is one of my favorite parts of fly tying.

A lesson in patience. 3 hours of zero bites, then all of a sudden this beast decides to snack on a little stonefly nymph! 20 minutes of fighting, a quick picture, and he is released to make the next generation!

The steelhead of the lake Ontario tributaries enjoyed a nice boost in temperature last week. It seems like the egg bite has shut down and the caddis and stonefly nymph bite is on in full force. Dead drifting the most simple patterns has been the most effective for me. No magic there, just some black or brown dubbing and some black goose biots for stonefly nymphs, and then plain natural hares ear for another effective nymph. Very doable for fly tyers of all skills.

Playing these fish, however, is not a beginners game. 6 pound tippet has been the key. Landing a fish that fights hard and has no intentions of dying today AND regularly weighs more than 10 pound is easier said than done. Be patient, keep side pressure, use the drag, leave your hand off the spool, and if the fish runs let it go. You can't stop it. These steel beasts usually have 3 or more sprint runs in them, and if they decide to go just hang on tight and enjoy it. Landing one solo is doable and A great challenge, but it really helps to have a buddy with a net.

Stay safe everybody, and enjoy some winter outdoors!
