Being an Enrolled Agent requires more emotional fluidity than many might think.
Think about it—Enrolled Agents represent clients during stressful IRS audits and complex disputes, which can be draining. And situations like helping a client sell property of a deceased relative, along with the self-doubt and pressure that come with continuing education every few years can deepen the strain.
Empathy and resilience aren’t taught as technical skills on the SEE exam—last time I checked.
We should change that.
dealing with the IRS, wanting to help the client, and managing your personal well-being, all of these can compound into a major source of stress.
And this is when burnout slowly creeps in. If you’re not conscious, you will absorb too many emotions that aren’t yours.
Think of emotion as E(nergy) in motion.
The key to longevity in this profession is protecting yourself and learning to manage emotions and cognitive load so you can be present in relationships with friends and family. This helps offset some of the load.
I’d even argue you’d be able to retain more clients when they see that you not only care about them, but are also relentless as hell.
You can’t separate nervous system optimization and career performance. Your performance depends on what is happening internally.
You can’t identify a deduction if your brain’s fried.
