An oldie but a goodie! A little team workout of bleachers to end the first week of practice. Very excited about this team, can’t wait to see how they do this year!

College coaches notice WAY more at practice than athletes think we do. 👀
It’s not just who runs the fastest, jumps the highest or throws the farthest.
I notice…
⏰ Who consistently shows up ready to go.
👂 Who listens when a coach is giving feedback—even when the feedback isn’t for them.
🤝 Who encourages their teammates.
😤 Who changes their attitude when practice gets difficult.
👀 Who cuts corners when they think nobody is watching.
📈 Who makes a mistake…and actually tries to fix it on the next rep.
And one of the biggest ones:
BODY LANGUAGE.
How you respond when things aren’t going your way tells me a lot more than how you act when everything is going well.
Talent shows me what you CAN become.
Your daily habits show me how badly you actually want to get there.
The little things aren’t little when you do them every single day.

College coaches notice more than your performance.

We notice how you communicate.

We notice whether you make excuses or accept coaching.

We notice how you respond when a competition goes poorly.

We notice how you treat teammates, officials, opponents and support staff.

We notice what you do when nobody is celebrating you.

Your mark matters-but your habits tell coaches what it might be like to work with you every day.

Which one do you think athletes overlook most?

WOULD I RECRUIT THIS ATHLETE? 👀

🏃‍♂️ Long Jump — 23’2” / 7.06m
⚡ 100m — 11.12
📚 GPA — 3.7
🎓 Junior
📈 Limited technical jump training

Sounds like an easy YES, right?

Here’s the catch…

His performances are extremely inconsistent.

One meet he looks like a legitimate college jumper.

The next meet he’s struggling to break 21 feet.

As a college coach, I’m not just looking at the PR.

I want to know WHY the inconsistency exists.

Is it technical?

Is it preparation?

Is it how he handles competition?

Or is that 23’2” jump showing me what this athlete could become with the right development?

Recruiting isn’t always as simple as looking at a performance list and picking the athletes with the best PRs.

Sometimes you’re recruiting what an athlete could become.

So now YOU’RE the college coach…

👇 RECRUIT or PASS?

Tell me why in the comments. I want to see how many of you make the same decision I would. 👀

Testing day 📊⚡️

Anybody can put athletes through workouts.

The bigger question is…

Is the training actually working?

That’s why we test.

🏃 Speed & acceleration
💥 Explosiveness
💪 Strength & power

But the numbers themselves aren’t the end goal.

Testing helps us identify:

📈 Where an athlete has improved
🔍 Where weaknesses still exist
🎯 What we need to emphasize in training
🧠 How we can individualize development moving forward

As a coach, I don’t want to guess whether an athlete is getting better.

I want evidence.

TEST → TRAIN → RETEST → ADJUST.

Because training is only useful if we can measure whether it’s actually working.

First day of college track practice. 👀🏃‍♂️

And believe it or not, I’m not worried about who looks the fastest on Day 1.

I’m watching the things athletes sometimes don’t realize coaches notice:

⚡ Energy — Did you show up ready to work?
👀 Attention to detail — Are you actually listening and learning?
🤝 Teammates — How do you interact with the people around you?
💪 Effort — What happens when something gets difficult?
🧠 Attitude — How do you respond when you don’t perform well?

Nobody needs to be in championship shape on the first day.

But your effort, attitude and body language are always under your control.

The first week isn’t about proving how good you already are.

It’s about showing us how good you’re willing to become.

Week 1 starts now. 📈

Athletes — what do you think coaches notice FIRST at practice? 👇

A hard recruiting truth:

Being talented does not automatically make an athlete recruitable.

College coaches are also evaluating:

• Academic consistency
• Communication
• Coachability
• Character
• Development potential
• Whether the athlete fits the program

Your performance may get a coach’s attention—but everything surrounding that performance helps determine what happens next.

Athletes: Which part of recruiting do you think coaches value most besides performance?

Parents and coaches: Share this with an athlete who needs to understand the complete picture.
