🚨Follow-Up Fact Check🚨

As a follow-up to our fact check from Saturday, 3 out of the 5 homes pictured were actually located in York Area United Fire and Rescue response area.

1 of those homes was the scene of a fire in August 2024 where the first arriving crew found 4 people trapped.

That first arriving engine had just 2 personnel. A Captain and a driver.

During the incident, the captain was searching inside alone and due to the conditions had to declare a MAYDAY.

Mutual crews crews searching for more trapped occupants. Those 2 initial personnel arrived and found 4 people trapped from multiple floors.

So if Supervisor Dvoryak thinks York City only has 3 personnel minimum to handle these fires then we will gladly take 3 personnel as well!

The same types of homes exist here. The same fires happen here. The same life saving tasks have to be performed here.

The community and firefighters lives matter here!

Great to see departments investing in their people! A healthier, safer workforce leads to a stronger community.

Virginia Beach, VA is making major changes to its firefighter schedule and plans to hire heavily to make it happen. Firefighters currently work a three shift, 21 day schedule averaging 56 hours a week. The first step will bring that down to 48 hours while still using the 21 day but with a Kelly day added. The long term plan is to add a fourth shift and eventually reach a 42 hour workweek, which could mean a 24/72 or some sort of other 4-platoon schedule. Getting there will require an estimated 165 additional firefighters, with hiring spread over the next several budget years. Fire Chief Kenneth Pravetz says the changes are aimed at better recovery, work life balance, career longevity, recruitment and retention. It is a significant investment in staffing and an acknowledgment that improving the schedule and quality of life can play a major role in not just keeping firefighters on the job, but healthier, safer and happier!

🚨 Another Fact Check

Recently, during a meeting, we heard from a supervisor that York City has 3 personnel because they fight row home fires.

A couple things:

1. York City does not have staffing of 3 personnel for only one reason. Staffing levels are based on many factors, including citizen safety, firefighter safety, operational effectiveness, and the number of tasks that must be completed at an emergency.

2. If row homes are the reason 3 firefighters are needed, take a look at these homes. Can you tell which ones are in York City and which ones are in York Area United Fire and Rescue response area?

Fire doesn’t change based on a municipal boundary.

Tasks don’t require fewer firefighters simply because the address happens to be outside York City.

Safety doesn’t matter simply because the address happens to be outside York City.

Adequate staffing is about having enough firefighters to safely and effectively do the job when an emergency happens.

🎗️ No firefighter or emergency medical worker should ever feel like they have to carry the weight of the job alone.

On World Su***de Prevention Day, we remind our brothers and sisters that it’s okay to ask for help. You are never alone.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988. Please check on each other and look out for one another.

🎗️ No one should have to face the weight of the job alone.

Su***de prevention starts with breaking the silence and making sure fire fighters and emergency medical workers know when, where, and how to get help.

🚨Springettsbury Township Budget Process🚨

As Springettsbury Township begins its upcoming budget process, we encourage residents to pay attention and get involved especially as discussions continue regarding fire department staffing.

Throughout our push for safer staffing, we have continued to face resistance from Springettsbury Township supervisors regarding funding additional firefighter positions. The budget process is where priorities are discussed, decisions are made, and funding is ultimately determined.

Upcoming Budget Meetings:

October 5 — Budget Workshop | 6:00–7:00 PM
October 12 — Budget Workshop | 6:00–7:00 PM
October 14 — Budget Workshop | 6:00–7:00 PM
November 18 — Budget Presentation | 6:30–7:00 PM

If adequate fire department staffing matters to you, these are important meetings to follow.

We encourage Springettsbury Township residents to attend, ask questions, and make their voices heard. Budgets reflect priorities and public safety should be one of them.

Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸

Labor Day is a reminder of what the labor movement has fought for. Safer workplaces, fair wages, reasonable hours, and better working conditions. Even if you’re not a fan of labor, we hope you enjoy your day off!

Also let’s recognize the hardworking men and women whose labor keeps our communities and country moving forward.

And while we’re celebrating labor today, we can’t help but wish we had a little more of it. More firefighters means a safer community!
