The Oakland Raiders recovered a Ed Marinaro fumble on the Minnesota 17 yard line early the 1st Quarter. Had to settle for George Blanda 15 yard FG and a 3-0 lead. The Raiders fumbled 5 times in key situations and would not convert in the The Red Zone all day. That would be all she wrote for Coach John Madden and his Raiders. Bud Grant's angry Vikings rattled off 24 unanswered points. Fran Tarkenton threw a 7 yard pass to John Gilliam in the first for a 7-3 lead. Fred Cox added a 40 yard Field Goal at the 1010 mark in the 2nd Quarter 10-3 followed by a Tarkenton scamper for 13 yards and a touchdown making it 17-3 at Halftime. Minnesota took the kickoff and drove 73 yards on 11 plays culminating with Rookie Running Back sensation Chuck Foreman scoring on a 3 yard run for a 24-3 lead. Foreman was impressive for the home Metropolitan Stadium crowd in his rookie opener with 24 Carries and 99 tough yards. Tarkenton was precision personified converting on 11 of 12 passes for 91 yards.

At Miami 23

The San Fracisco 49ers came to the Orange Bowl in Miami to face the defending Superbowl Champion Dolphins. The 49ers showed why they are recognized as one of the top teams in the NFC by getting out to a 20-3 Halftime lead. Two touchdown passes from John Brodie to Gene Washington in the 2nd Quarter had the 49ers riding high. However, the Superbowl Champs rose to the occasion with a 20-3 run of their own in the 3rd and 4th Quarters. Garo Yepremian connected on two field goals in the 3rd Quarter and the Dolphins defense stiffened up pitching a 3rd Quarter shutout. The game was tied up with a 4th Quarter Miami surge on a 9 yard run by Mercury Morris for a touchdown with 4:59 in the 4th. The Dolphins got the ball back quickly on a Dick Anderson interception that led to a Griese to Warfield 10 yard touchdown pass with 3:19 left in the game and tied 23-23. The 49ers got the ball back and were able to drive 80 yards on 10 plays for a Bruce Gossett 23 yard Field Goal giving the 49ers a 26-23 lead with 6 Sec left in the game. Griese threw a desperation pass that failed. Final score San Francisco wins 26-23.

San Diego 14
at Washington 14

The San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins scratched and clawed their way to a 14-14 tie in the season opener at RFK Stadium. Mike Garrett's legs produced 103 yards on just 11 Carries for a whopping 9.4 yards per carry. Larry Brown was the workhorse for the Redskins with 30 carries for 120 hard earned yards. The Skins were rolling for almost the entire 1st Half with a 14-0 lead in the 2nd Quarter until a Cory Bacon 51 yard fumble return with just 52 sec left in the half breathed new life into the Chargers. The San Diego defense held steady pitching a 2nd half shutout and allowing rookie QB Dan Fouts to connect on a 17 yard Touchdown Pass to Wide Receiver Jerry Levias with 4 min and 40 seconds left in the game for a tie in the opener.
