I heard these words come out of a person who is probably considered the healthiest person in all of their social circles
This person looks like he works out. People in the office likely ask him about his workout often
He prioritizes his exercise routine, is very conscious about what he eats, and LOVES to play every sport. He’s pretty good at most of the sports he tries too
Today, he revealed to me that he has an enormous amount of fear right now
He’s recently begun to develop Achilles tendinitis that is so bad he cannot walk down his stairs normally some mornings.
He has to turn and shuffle down sideways, moving his feet & ankles as little as possible until he can “warm up” by rolling out his feet and putting on shoes.
This is the same person who walked 18 holes of golf yesterday, and played full court basketball on Monday night
He squatted his body weight for multiple reps in the gym last week, and has excellent stamina
But, he cannot walk down his stairs normally
He’s come face to face with the possibility of losing the freedom to do any physical activity he pleases
He’s absolutely terrified
Fortunately, we found each other before his fears became reality
Today we created the foundation for the plan that we are going to execute on to address his Achilles pain and a nagging back issue
I walked him through how he can expect to feel in 30, 60, and 90 days from now
I told him initially he’s going to have to reduce the amount of time he spends on a court or field doing the things he loves.
He didn’t like that. We discussed why that was necessary. He said he understood.
He still didn’t like it
Before he left today he said “I’m still afraid, but I trust you”
Now I get to do everything in my power to make sure he can play sports with his friends for as long as he wants
