Out side the Dugout

Out side the Dugout The transition from a softball Coach to a softball Dad!

07/11/2017

Had to pleasure of playing in the mud with #4 and #33 today. Countless grounders to shore up some mechanical issues, and they think were just practicing softball.

Whoa, where to start....It was suffocating, but not as suffocating as the Snakebite Defense! It was a sauna, but not as stifling as the Snakebite pitching. It was hot, but not as hot as the Snakebite bats.

Those girls in white pants stroll over to Lake Sumter State College for a double header today and come away smiling! Game one was a tight one, with Snakebite losing 3-2 on the most bizarre play I have ever seen on the softball field. #19 needs some WD-40! (hahaha)

In game 1 #4 Started and went 4 innings in the circle, yielding 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 hit batter, and an unearned run on a very confusing (to me) obstruction call. I always thought, wrongly, that if the ball arrives before the runner the catcher has the right to block the plate. (shrug). #10 comes in to the circle for the final 3 innings of game one and shuts them down as well. fast forward to bottom 7 with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. #10 hit her spot and the batter lifts a lazy fly ball to center. #19 dropstepps, and starts to move under the ball. Her knee brace locks up and she falls flat and the ball lands harmlessly 10 feet away. Not a happy moment in the Snakebite dugout! The girls played hard and fought for the win. It was in hand! But like Lucy moving the ball at the last second when Charlie Brown tries to kick it, Defeat was cleanly snatched from the Snakebite jaws of Victory!

Game two, the girls in white pants would not let one play decide the outcome! #10 throws 2 great innings and the bats as on fire, handing #11 a 3-0 lead for the final 5 innings. #11 was a carbon copy of #4 and #10! Scattering a few hits but the game was never in doubt. The 3-0 lead stretched to 6-0, and ended in a 9-2 Snakebite win. A pure team win! Good hitting, good defense, good pitching, and taking advantage of opportunities is what those girls in white pants treated us to today.

My hats off to these girls! 2 practices in, and they are playing at a high level to say the least!

Nice job Snakebite! 5-3 in 12 innings vs. St. Johns River State College. undermaned, but not out manned! 10 Snakebite girls vs. 25 St. Johns River State College girls for the win! Pitching was fantastic, with only 1 of the 3 runs given up were earned. Small World Moment, 1st pitcher we faced was North Marion/Williston Venom's own Malory Lowe, and the 2nd was Sky Davenport, South Sumter little league foe from our days in 9-10 year old Dunnellon Little League. Bragging moment, #4 goes 4 innings giving up 4 hits and 1 walk. However, she did give up an earned run.

Hats off to my #4 Emily Bowne, pitched 4 of the 9 innings Team snakebite played vs. the #3 JUCO in the state last year "Seminole State College". Inherited a runner on 2nd with no outs in the 2nd and got out of that inning with that runner scoring on a fielders choice and a extremely close play at the plate (Great throw Baratta 5 (look back) 3 (for the out) 2 (for the double play attempt). In the 3rd she gave up 1 hit, in the 7th she gave up 2 hits and an earned run, and in the 8th she gave up a hit and an unearned run. Impressed her old man that is for sure. Excited about next week @ St. Johns State College, and Lake Sumter State College!

she makes me smile!

Dirty white pants! All I see is Dirty White Pants! But nothing has brought me more joy than watching clean white pants transform into dirty white pants. Our family started this summer season not knowing what to expect. So many girls we "kinda knew", but didn't really "know". Coaches we have heard a lot about, but didn't really "know" much about. Parents we have seen around different ball fields and school events, but very few names could be matched with faces on our part. Strikers, Warriors, Bullets, TNF, all names that have been on the front of these girls jerseys in the past, and we have faced across the clay, but never thought we would share the same uniforms. I knew the names, I knew what kind of ability each individual could bring to the table, it was my job to know as a coach. What kind of pitches they threw, Strengths and weaknesses at the plate, fielding ability, I know each one in that aspect. But never did I think we would be side by side with these girls and parents. The most fun part about this season has yet to yield its fruit, next High School Softball Season it will. To walk up to the North Marion, Vanguard, Forrest, or Belleview fields will come with smiling anticipation. Anticipation of warm greeting, smiles, and hugs from girls that wore "Dirty White Pants". Hugs, high fives and inquiries on how our girls are doing, from the parents. Thank you for giving us a whole new branch to our softball family tree.

Snakebite Parents, Someone please bring a wig and old Snakebite jersey to the Backwards K, just in case we see James (The scout from CF). #8 Promised him he could play for us at the next tournament. but he had to wear a wig. ;)

When a man sees things of grace and beauty he gives those things a proper name meant for a female. Long flowing lines, always bright and never dark. I watched 10 girls battle heat, opponents, umpires, parents, and the occasional coach outburst. After 5 games, the 5th ending in defeat, they walked off the field with long flowing lines, always bright and never dark. the transformation of this loose fit group of girls has been so much fun to watch. 12 growing to 13, then 14, and now swelling to 15 has tested the coaching staff's ability to juggle, but all the while the ever constant long flowing lines are always bright. In the beginning we had miscommunication, timidness, and the urge to be "Safe" instead of aggressive. Now? I can hear #8 call for the ball clear across the clay. Bodies fly to the ball, but trust takes over when a better angle for the play can be made by a teammate. One mom tells a story of her daughter having always been the one looked upon to "make the play". Her aggressiveness was out of necessity, with team mates leaning on her. Now, 9 of the same aggressive young ladies share the diamond, a feeling of TEAM, and not so much girls she plays with. Trust! Running backwards tracking down a ball with every ounce of speed she can muster, and peeling away to a back-up roll when she is called off. The play is made, this is a TEAM. 4 games and three innings into the 5th, gives up 0 runs and commits 1 error. averaged 1 double play a game, and came within a cats whisker (from Skooter) of another 4 or 5 double plays. Great Pitching, fantastic defense, clutch hits, key bunts, and aggressive base running kept in the thick of things until the final out. After the hand shake, after the clearing of the dugout, I look down the back of the bleachers and see Long flowing lines, always bright, never dark.

On to Jacksonville ! !
