It was a big night and Utah spearfisherman can look forward to some positive changes to current fishing rules in our state. The DWR, USFA, and 2 or 3 groups from within the Utah Anglers Coalition ( mostly bass federation groups) met last night to discuss sustainable proposals to increase opportunities for spearfishing in the state.

The topics included longer or year round fishing seasons; the possibility of adding as many as a dozen lakes through out the state. The lakes that are currently open and the proposed lakes were discussed one by one on their particular issues, if there were any, and the potential impact that spearfishing might represent for that body of water.

The USFA stance on fishing, by any means of take, is that we need to protect and preserve fisheries so that they can provide viable opportunities for all sportsman for generations to come.
This is the guiding principle that motivates and dictates our direction for wanting more fishing opportunities.

There are still opponents to spearfishing and that was clearly expressed last night during our talks. Some of the opposition can still be attributed to perception and misunderstanding and some to blind bias and selfishness. By observation this sentiment seems to be waning as unsupported opinions and arguments against spearfishing using ridiculous explanations is greatly diminished. But the really great part of all this is that we still came together around a table to discuss the issues and improve fishing rules state wide!

Big night tonight! A special committee has been formed to finalize our spearfishing proposals to the DWR. This committee consists of 2 members of the BOD of USFA, DWR aquatic game managers, other key fishing group members and the Utah state fisheries managers.

We are optimistic that we can all work together for a positive outcome. Stay tuned...

Things are moving forward again, after a long break. We have several activities planned for this summers diving season.

At the last Utah Angler Coalition (UAC) meeting earlier in January a subcommittee was formed with members of the DWR and other angler group members including USFA members. The purpose of the committee is to discuss and develop changes that effect spearfishing but will also benefit other anglers and will have a positive impact on the goals of the DWR and promote and protect healthy fisheries.

The USFA met on Tuesday the 29th at Dive Addicts in Draper UT. to discuss and develop the ideas that will be presented to the subcommittee on February 26th. Once the subcommittee has a concrete plan to present to the UAC http://utahanglerscoalition.org/ we will do so.

To find out ways that you as a spearfisherman can help meet the mission of the DWR and the UAC and at the same time improve regulations for spearfishing come to our next USFA meeting on March 5th 7pm at Dive Addicts.
