AFC Roma U13 Girls (red team)

Third game of the season provides opportunities to see what we have improve in terms of possession of the ball, movement and positional awareness in order to attack positive spaces.

We still much to do in terms of getting adjusted to 11v11 competition and format. The field is big for them and we need to learn how to balance space. We could not get the win but I did see a lot of improvements and getting closer to our game model - play on attacking half of the field, maintain possession with the intent to move forward quickly and attack positive spaces.

If we can clean up a bit, we will have much more fun. Today we do a 15-20 minute video session, reinforce the players about trust and effort, highlighting positive actions while reviewing opportunities to improve. Then we jump into training session to prepare for this coming Sunday.

Sunday’s game recap — the goal.

The importance of this moment is the way our team celebrates one another, look for each other to enjoy the moment… that’s the most important part here - the support, togetherness, trust for each other. Great goal though…

We always have to be vigilant to maintain not only our standards, but our good culture as well which is one of the hardest part of a coach - create a culture of support, respect, trust…

Team came back into the second half with a reinforced idea on how/when/where/who presses. Playing good defense is understanding time and triggers that we can use to our advantage to either negate and disrupt forward movements, and/or dispossess the ball from the opponent.

Sunday’s game recap — Rainy day in West Chester PA.

The girls played well overall, we earned a point that feels so good!!!
It took us a bit to get comfortable and gain good control of ball and field spaces. Second game of our season gave us a tied, but that’s just the score - I can start seeing some good actions, our game model of high lines to press and stop/disrupt play and build ups.

Learning new environments is always challenging and extremely uncomfortable, but it’s very much needed in order to grow and get better. This team has me, and I have them 100%! Together we will improve this season for sure.

We focused on a technical session yesterday due to low numbers.

We had time to work on our passing, third player run/option movements, through ball passing/runs/movements, and finish with a shooting drills encompassing all aspects.

We also had time to review some of the Duktig Brand ⚽️📓 player notebooks 📓 and make sure they are putting in the work. I am highlighting this one in particular due to the detail she put in from one practice to the next. Details matter, and I challenged them to be more detailed on their self reflections. Absolutely love the effort and the results will show up soon. They will get better I know it!

And of course we can’t forget to be a little silly from time to time… I was once told that “in order to coach girls you must have a personality”

The US Soccer webinar/workshop on coaching development and player development plan was also great and lots of good info I already started using…

Recap and solutions.

We celebrate the wins, but also respect and reflect the losses!!

We had our first game of the season over the weekend, it was a very humbling and emotional result. Obviously not how we wanted to start, but along the way I saw grit, determination, commitment, passion, and competitive spirits for each other. We should never hide from our losses as they are an important part of how we learn to grow and get better ❤️‍🩹

First year in an 11 v 11 ⚽️ format, big field 🏟️, playing a little bit of older players. We are finding our way, we are learning, and we are honoring the game regardless of the outcome. We must reflect 🤔 and understand where we need to improve and work to help the team stay tuned in and remain competitive. The learning 📝 should never ever stop. Wins will come, losses will show up… but the dedication and sacrifices I make for this team will stay positive and continue to increase. It is the only way I know how to coach.

The college experience.

Recapping the last few weeks here. Our head coach took this first picture because it means a lot to us. The team has played two scrimmages and three official games thus far; this past Saturday we played our third game, against a program that has dominated the PSAC conference in the NCAA DII for a while now.

We faced West Chester University, AND our team was able to compete, contest, and maintained a 1-0 score for a full half and some minutes in the second half, eventually tired legs 🦵🏻and exhausted 😩 minds 🧠 took a toll. 13 players and the support of the injured 5 players accomplished a task - COMPETE

The team competed with warrior mentality, unbreakable spirit, and a desire to play for each other 100%. It was incredible to watch them compete at such a level, frustrate our opponent and really make them work… extremely proud of this team and all its members.

We are new 🆕 in the PSAC conference and learning, building block by block, gaining experience and confidence game by game. It will take time but we are committed to building a program we all can be proud of, a program that will compete and excel in the coming years.
