Dr. Joel Hagood Highlights Workforce Development, Campus Growth at East Walker Chamber Membership Meeting
SUMITON, Ala. — Bevill State Community College President Dr. Joel Hagood served as the guest speaker at today’s East Walker County Chamber of Commerce Membership Meeting, where he shared updates on the college’s expanding educational offerings, recent campus improvements, and the critical role partnerships play in driving economic growth throughout the region.
During his presentation, Dr. Hagood highlighted the wide range of academic and workforce training opportunities available at Bevill State’s Sumiton Campus, emphasizing the college’s commitment to preparing students for high-demand careers while meeting the evolving needs of local employers.
Among the updates discussed were several significant renovations and program expansions on the Sumiton Campus. These improvements include a revamped Automotive Technology Department, the addition of Welding Technology and Machine Tool Technology programs, and the transformation of an existing building into a state-of-the-art Robotics Laboratory designed to provide students with hands-on experience using advanced manufacturing technologies.
Dr. Hagood also spoke about the growing excitement surrounding the development of the Heritage Landing Industrial Park and the opportunities it presents for economic development in Walker County and the surrounding region.
“Bevill State is proud to be a partner in the future growth of East Walker County,” said Dr. Hagood. “The development of Heritage Landing Industrial Park, combined with the strength of our workforce training programs and the strategic location of this community near Interstate 22 and Birmingham, creates tremendous opportunities for business and industry. We look forward to continuing our work alongside the East Walker County Chamber of Commerce and the Walker County Development Authority to help attract new employers, create jobs, and build a stronger future for our region.”
As part of its commitment to economic development, Bevill State currently provides office space on the Sumiton Campus for both the East Walker County Chamber of Commerce and the Walker County Development Authority. Dr. Hagood noted that this collaborative approach allows the three organizations to work closely together in supporting existing businesses while recruiting new industries to the area.
The proximity of the Sumiton area to Interstate 22 and the Birmingham metropolitan region positions East Walker County as an attractive location for rapid business and industrial growth. Through continued collaboration among education, business, and economic development leaders, the region is well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities and strengthen its workforce for years to come.
