A little rough around the edges, but my love is honey 🍯

06/10/2026

I began writing this poem almost 2 years ago after going through one of my many breakups.

My love life is not something I display on social media and yet, I have loved a whole lot. I've accepted things from people and I've done my best to make the most out of what I was given.

After surviving my second surgery, I finally finished this poem. I performed the ritual I speak of as a ceremonalist and freed myself from something many of us find ourselves in: the idea that we must become what they want in order to be loved, in order to not be left, in order to be chosen.

I have found myself again. This poem lives in Towards What Hurt, debuting 9/8 and this was my first time performing it.

Sometimes I get the art blues. Like there is so much art in this world that I’ll never see. There is art I want to see, but I can’t seem to slow down enough to take it in. Art blues. There is art I cannot afford to see, or buy, or own. Art that is way out of my league. Art that I’m in that I’ll never find again. Art blues. Then there is art I see my brother, my sister, my friend as and I get sad, I wish they knew how beautiful they were. There is art in my mind I fear I’ll never make and there is art I wish to never forget. Art blues. Y’all sometimes I go to see art and I get the blues. 💙

“I was out when I was close to her at the bar. When we were making love. I was out in LA, where we ran the Venice strip. I was out in the mirror when we saw each other, together.

I was always out in my own mind.”

For those who are new here —

I’m adria. I write poems + essays on the body, grief, identity and becoming.

My work is rooted in the body. In what it remembers, what it survives, and what it slowly learns to trust again.

I’m interested in the language we reach for after rupture, the self we return to through grief, and the gentleness that becomes possible when we choose to stop abandoning ourselves.

My debut poetry collection, Towards What Hurt, ships 9/8 and is available for preorder now.
