For many people, yoga begins with āsana, the physical postures. Strength, flexibility, and balance are all valuable aspects of the practice, but in the classical yogic tradition, they were never the final destination.

Instead, āsana prepared the body for what came next. Once the body became steady, the breath became the focus through prāṇāyāma, the Sanskrit practice of consciously regulating the breath. By working with prāṇa, the body's vital life force, yogis cultivated the clarity and steadiness needed for meditation.

Rather than separate practices, āsana and prāṇāyāma were designed to work together. While one creates stability in the body, the other cultivates stability in the mind, laying the foundation for meditation and the deeper practices of yoga.

Nāḍī Śodhana was developed as a way to prepare the mind for meditation. Rather than sitting down and expecting the mind to become still, yogis understood that the breath could be used as a doorway to steadiness.

More commonly known as Alternate Nostril Breathing, Nāḍī Śodhana is Sanskrit for "purification of the energy channels." In the yogic tradition, prāṇa, our vital life force, is believed to move through subtle pathways called nāḍīs. This practice is used to help balance the flow of prāṇa, creating the conditions for a calmer, more focused mind.

Thousands of years later, this ancient wisdom is still relevant today. Our attention is constantly pulled in different directions, making it easy to move through life on autopilot. By giving the mind a single point of focus through the rhythm of the breath, Alternate Nostril Breathing invites us to slow down, become present, and arrive at meditation with greater steadiness and awareness. Over time, those same qualities begin to extend beyond our practice and into daily life.

We take nearly 20,000 breaths every day, yet most happen without a second thought. In the yogic tradition, however, the breath is something to be observed, refined, and practiced with intention.

Prāṇāyāma is the Sanskrit word for the conscious regulation of the breath. It comes from prāṇa, meaning vital life force, and āyāma, meaning to expand, extend, or regulate. Rather than viewing the breath as simply the movement of air, yogis understood it as a way of working with prāṇa itself.

Over thousands of years, a wide variety of prāṇāyāma techniques were developed, each with a distinct purpose. Some cultivate balance, others generate heat and vitality, while others prepare the body and mind for meditation. Together, they form one of the most refined and enduring disciplines within the yogic tradition.
