Summer 1995, Michael Jordan had just lost to the Orlando Magic in the playoffs when his teammate Ron Harper recalled a moment in the locker room.
Jordan looked around and said, “We’re going to start working out.” Harper asked when, and Jordan replied, “Tomorrow.”
Not long after, he agreed to make a movie with Warner Bros., but only on one condition. Through his agent David Falk, he said:
“There was no way I would do the movie unless I was able to work out and play on the Warner Bros. lot.”
Warner Bros. initially suggested painting lines on a parking lot and putting up hoops. Trainer Tim Grover shut it down:
“Initially what they were going to do was simply paint some lines on the parking lot and put a couple of hoops up. And I was like, ‘No, no, no. This is Michael Jordan. We’re not playing basketball in a parking lot. Not gonna happen.’”
So they built the “Jordan Dome,” a full-size private court under an inflatable roof completed in less than a week. By day, Jordan filmed Space Jam, and by night he played three-hour pickup games with NBA stars.
Warner Bros. got their movie, Jordan got his gym, and the next season, the Chicago Bulls went 72–10 and won the championship. 🐐
