My daughter and I started Taekwondo at the same time and we came up through the ranks together. I loved all the extra time it gave us to spend doing something we both enjoyed. I enjoyed instructing with her and going to tournaments with her but, as kids do, she grew up. She moved away for college and later found a new taekwondo school to train at that was closer to her. It made sense and I was happy for her to have found a new Taekwondo home.
But then, something pretty awesome happened. The school she trains at joined the USAMA. USA Martial Arts is a larger association that Mellennia DeWitt belongs to and now, so does Strength & Honor Taekwondo Academy +. This means that even though we wear different school names on our uniforms, we are still part of a larger team. We still get to train together, compete at events together, and have extra time together. And now, we’re also preparing for Nationals together as members of Team USAMA.
I can’t stress enough how great Taekwondo is for parents to do WITH their children. It’s easy for kids to busy themselves on devices and not really engage with the family. And it’s so easy for teens to pull away and hide in their rooms. I also have a 16 year old son that does Taekwondo with me and because of it, I can count on having a few nights per week that we spend time together.
If you’re looking for a way to spend time with your kids, or a way to reconnect with them, consider Taekwondo. Forget the stereotypes. You don’t have to be young, athletically gifted, skinny, or rich to be a part of our Taekwondo family. Everyone is welcome! Our rates are very affordable and we even offer family discounts.
Also, I want to say thank you to the USAMA and Master Nixon for allowing an opportunity for academies to work together, share ideas with each other, and encourage each other. We are better together. 🥋
