Mariners Grab Lead Late For Victory Over Xenia Scouts
The Springboro Mariners topped Xenia Scouts 12-11 on Sunday after taking the lead late in the game. This game was a wild one folks. The Mariners were off to a hot start in the first inning, scoring 3 runs. However, a first-inning triple play by the Scouts killed the Mariner rally. The game was tied at 11 in the top of the eleventh when an error scored one run. Despite falling down by 10 runs in the fifth inning, The Xenia Scouts tried to fight back but, in the end came up short.
The Mariners extended their early lead with three runs in the top of the third thanks to RBI singles by Liston and Xavier. The Mariners scored five runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning. Adam Stefanelli singled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Dallas Kaylor doubled, scoring two runs, and an error scored one run. The Xenia Scouts tied the game in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a single by John Sherman, a walk by Alex Shulke, and a fielder's choice by Zac Calvert.
Stefanelli earned the win for the Mariners. The righty earned his first win in the MVABL, surrendering zero hits and zero runs over one and one-third innings, striking out two and walking four. Josh Cvetkovich took the loss for The Scouts. The starting pitcher went 10 innings, allowing 12 runs (eight earned) on
11 hits, striking out nine and walking five. Cvetkovich tossed a whopping 183 pitches during the game. This has to be a regular season record! Will Bohlman stepped on the hill first for the Mariners.
The left-handed pitcher gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out eight and walking one in his first start of the season. Christian Simms collected the save. Jaycob Banks appeared in relief for the Mariners.
Mariners accumulated 11 hits in the game. Stefanelli, Trey Walker, Kaylor, and Xavier each collected two hits for Springboro. Kaylor and Xavier were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in three runs for the Mariners.
The Xenia Scouts collected 14 hits in the game. Sherman drove the middle of the lineup, leading Xenia with three runs batted in. He went 3-for-6 on the day. Calvert, Lou Ryan, Cvetkovich, and Anthony Ragan each collected multiple hits for The Scouts. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, piling up six walks for the game. Ryan led the team with two stolen bases, as The Scouts stole five total bases in the game.
