This last Thursday I did something I never thought I would have to do.
I didn’t run.
After 4,471 consecutive days, my run streak has officially come to an end. 😢
I’ve been thinking about this day for a long time, wondering what it would feel like when it finally happened. Honestly? It hurts.
That number represents more than 12 years of running. It represents early mornings, late nights, vacations, holidays, bad weather, exhaustion, busy days, and so many days when running was the last thing I wanted to do- but I went anyway.
It represents 4,471 days of keeping a promise to myself.
My left leg started hurting last weekend, and over the last few days the pain got progressively worse. The last few days, running hurt. And then… even walking hurt. And as much as I wanted to protect that number, I knew I had to protect my body more.
So I made the hardest decision I’ve ever made as a runner.
I stopped.
I’m disappointed. I’m sad. I’m probably going to cry about it a few more times. 😂😭
But I’m also incredibly proud.
Because 4,471 days happened. No one can take those days away from me. The streak may have ended, but everything it gave me- the memories, the races, the miles, the strength, the discipline, and the person I became along the way- doesn’t disappear.
And maybe this is the beginning of a different chapter.
For now, I’m going to let my leg heal. I’m going to be patient with myself. And when I’m ready, I’ll put one foot in front of the other again.
Because the streak ended.
But I’m still a runner. ❤️🏃♀️
