Guns are cool, but mags make 'em run right! (Link in bio to get your gear)
A quick overview of MP5 magazines since we've got several on the shelf needing new homes.
Many of you will see the original "stick" or straight mag on early model photos. HK went to curved 30rd mags in 1976 due to feedability issues with sub-sonic ammo (Dynamit Nobel 147 grain sub-sonic from what I've read recently).
The curved 30rd mags will have the date and "HK MP5" marked on the mag body until the year 1980. In 1980 the mags began to be marked with either the date or with the date code system that was introduced (referenced below). The system stayed in place until it was changed in 1994. Regardless of the date code system, 9x19 will appear on all German HK date-coded magazines.
For MP5 magazines, that date code is located on the left side of the magazine, immediately beneath the caliber marking towards the bottom. In this case, the "IE" date code is associated with 1984. Yes, these mags are older than some of you and that's okay. They're still going strong!
There are different date code systems for HK fi****ms, magazines, parts, etc and each of them has both a unique history and collectability interest. The pre-ban (1994) magazines we have available are in great shape and are for those shooters who want just a bit more history with their firearm while also ensuring a reliable feeding system for their firearm.
Please check your state laws and regulations in regards to pre-ban mags. Since the date codes are clearly visible on these there's no uncertainty about either their origin or year of production. Some states require pre-ban mags to have been purchased prior to a certain date while others are only concerned with when they were produced.
