I had been working with a client for a while on boundaries and in particular with not enabling a friend of theirs who always had so many hardships and extenuating circumstances and reasons they just needed a little more help each week or month. My client finally drew a hard boundary with love in the late spring, and within a month the person had persevered through the biggest, most disruptive hurdle mostly on their own (my client helped with a minor ask after the hardest part had been done). Now, several months later, I have gotten an update that the person my client set and held a boundary with has accomplished several major goals, with very minimal contact with my client!

It’s a beautiful effect I’m going to nickname “Domino Coaching” where difficult work and healthy boundaries done by one lead to material improvement in those they interact with.

Boundaries pretty much always feel not great to the person on the other side of them, at least initially. They rarely feel stellar to the person setting them! But this is a wonderful example of the bigger picture of how setting a boundary for yourself can jump start positive change and growth in the other person. It won’t always be so dramatic, but it often actually is!

Enabling harms the enabled, not just the increasingly depleted enabler.
