Ennis ISD honored the 25th Anniversary of the undefeated (16-0) 2001 Ennis Lions State Championship Football Team in a pregame ceremony on Friday August 28th at Lion Memorial Stadium. It was a great turnout of players and coaches.

Indians steal the show in Rivalry with Ennis

ENNIS TX - The infamous "Battle of 287" returned to Lion Memorial Stadium on Friday night, as the state's top ranked Waxahachie Indians stormed the Ennis Lions 72-14, before a packed house of Ellis County football fans.

The famed rivalry that dates back to 1908 has also served as the teams' season opener for the last five seasons- with the Indians winning four of those games by an average of more that 23 points, including a 44-13 victory in Ennis last season. Ennis last beat Waxahachie, 22-21 in overtime in 2021.

The Lions looked to snap that losing streak in the series and spoil the debut of Head Coach Lawrence Williams in front of a home crowd, longing for a return to the greatness that won them a state championship in 2000, 2001, 2004 & 2014. Unfortunately for the Lions, Waxahachie proved that the top-ranked team in the Midwest region are every bit as strong as the team that narrowly lost the state quarterfinal to Duncanville 35-27 a year ago.

Williams' Indians launched an all-out assault on the Lion defense on the arm of South Carolina commit Jerry Myer II, scoring touchdowns on each of their first three possessions- taking a 37-7 lead into the half.

Despite the quickly mounting odds, the Lions defense mustered the strength to force a pair of Waxahachie punts before the end of the half, to get themselves on the scoreboard in the final minutes of the first half.

Quarterback Elijah LeBlanc utilized every bit of his athleticism to find ways to get the Lions back into the game early, but even the heroic efforts of the multi-talented quarterback were not enough to overcome the Indians early lead and a stingy defense that helped the team earn a no. 12 ranking in USA Today's Top 25.

The second half was unfortunately more of the same. The tempo that led the Indians to their big first half lead, continued to spread the field and created big plays that kept the game out of the Lions' reach. Waxahachie outscored Ennis 35-7 after halftime to reach 72 points scored before the final whistle.

For Ennis, the game showed the gap between the rebuilding Lions roster and an Indians team with state title expectations. Despite that difference, the Lions set out to start their own run for another state title at the top of the rankings, and are sure to use the loss as fuel to propel them through the season and into the playoffs. The Lions will look to regroup next week at home against Midlothian.
