This past weekend Back Mountain Lightning made memories that will last a lifetime. The girls played at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex at the Disney’s Presidents Day tournament. The facility was truly amazing. What looked like a turf field was beautiful grass. What an amazing opportunity for the girls. The last game was even streamed so family and friends were able to watch from home.
The competition was fierce. Some of the top teams from all over the USA were there. Two teams that we had played made it to the final four.
This weekend was a great experience not only because they played on a bigger stage but also for what we have learned from each game. I knew the girls were tough but man they really have a never give up mindset because out of the 210 minutes the girls played this weekend, there was not one moment when they had their heads down. They just kept fighting and made the teams really earn their wins. What was really amazing is were making adjustments on the fly and despite never practicing the new formations they were able to execute the plays.
On Sunday morning we knew that this would be our last game. It would also be one of the toughest games since were playing the 9th best team in Florida. The girls had a 1-0 lead 55 mins into the game before Florida came back and won the game in the last 15 mins. If the games were only 60 mins then the game would have ended in a 1-1 tie. The game was very exciting and the girls were just out there having fun and working as a team.
Some coaches, teams, parents or outsiders judge a team by the scoreboard. For this team if you were on the sidelines you would have been able to see a bunch of girls that wanted to get better, encourage their teammates and learn. You saw this displayed after the final whistle blew. The team gathered and we talked about the game and the overall tournament. The girls gave a round of applause to the goalie, which was awesome and very well deserved. Without her and some of the amazing saves that were made the games could have easily gotten out of hand. That’s what Back Mountain Lightning is all about.
Big shout out to Coach Nick from Back Mountain Impact for taking time out of his vacation to join us on the sidelines and work individually with some of the girls based on what he saw on the field.
I am so very proud of these girls not only for how hard they worked but also how they kept fighting until the very end. This tournament also marked the first time in 2022 that we were able to get our traditional team selfie following each of the games. Below are our selfies and some team shots from this weekend.
A special thank you goes out to our sponsors that helped make this weekend possible for the girls.
