All-American Bulldogs April Recap
Crown Point
The month started at the CP Sportsplex in a 4-team tune-up with 3 of the best teams in Indiana. The Dogs went 0-3, but battled and sharpened their skills for success in the next 2 tournaments.
New Lenox
The Dogs cruised over the first 3 games, out-scoring opponents 38-5. Fletcher Govert (8R), Kevin Scanlon (3B,HR,5RBI), Jacob Highsmith (3B,HR,5RBI) and James Gerstner (2 2B,5RBI) all registered 4+ hits on the 3 game span.
In the championship, the Dogs looked to avenge a pool play tie against the same team a year ago. Govert, Ebin Whitehouse and Highsmith each had 2 hits. Whitehouse and Highsmith combined to go 7 innings, only allowing 3R (1ER). The gloves came to play, turning 2 huge double plays in what is becoming a trend for this ascending squad. Brett Sullivan, Carter Wieser and Bentley Sink all played crucial roles in the Dogs' 3 double-plays over the weekend.
Peoria (Glove Tourney)
Pool play was dominated by the pitching, as Jacob Highsmith, Bentley Sink, Carter Wieser and Kevin Scanlon combined to allow 0 ER over 8 innings. Ebin Whitehouse (2B,HR,5RBI) and Kevin Scanlon (2 2B,HR,9RBI) connected on opposite-field home runs. Lincoln Hadt (2B), Fletcher Govert (2 2B), James Gerstner (2B) and Brett Sullivan (2B) all added extra-base hits as the dogs cruised to the #1 seed.
It would take 3 wins on Sunday to take the title, and it was solid pitching, timely hitting and flashing some serious leather, that eventually won the Dogs some new leather. Gerstner (7 hits) and Bryce Vincent (5) paced an offense that put up 34 runs over a 3 game span. Jacob Highsmith hit a moon shot to left-center for his 3rd yahtzee of the season. Whitehouse hit his 2nd bomb of the weekend as well. Oscar Obregon found his stroke at the plate, with 2 ginormous hits in the championship. Obregon, Wieser and Whitehouse turned game-defining double-plays to end both the 5th and 6th innings of the final game. On the mound, Gerstner (W), Sink (W), Wieser (W), Scanlon, Whitehouse and and Highsmith had 19 K over 16 innings on championship Sunday.
The All-American Bulldogs (11-5) are back in action Mother's Day weekend in Bradley.
