NLS9 - the only time I’ve raced in heavier rain was the SCCA Runoffs in 2023 in a hurricane 🌀
Judson started the race in the dry (and set a new PB lap time 👏) and it started raining late in his stint while he was on dry tires (🤠). Then Denny ran a mixed conditions stint on rain tires which as much an effort in tire preservation as it was in pace. Both did a great job of surviving challenging conditions and we all learned how much we can push in the ever changing Eifel weather.
I ran the final 90 minutes in what started as “moderate rain” which turned to full biblical levels of rain. The hydroplaning was intense and tbh I’ve never been more mentally worn out after a stint. I think I almost crashed somewhere between 10 and 97 times sometimes hydroplaning at less than 100kph. But we survived to finish P4 overall in SP10 and P2 🥈 in SP10 AM. This was my first wet stint in an NLS race and I now have good data and video to help me improve and make the car better in the wet. Overall it was a ton of fun even though it was a bit terrifying for most of the time 😂

NLS 8 recap in photos - started well and ended quickly!
For Saturday’s NLS8 race, we had great weather and what looked to be a full dry race! I qualified 3rd in SP10 and started the race. I had a battle with some out of class cars (Cup 2 and AT1/GT3) before settling into P2 in SP10 by Flugplatz about three seconds from the leader. Unfortunately, I then started to feel what felt like a suspension or tire issue on Lap 1. I felt a big snap of oversteer In Schwedenkreuz (not fun) and then a big drop in grip/stability through the fast left-hander after Fuchsröhre where I barely kept it off the wall. After this, I backed the pace way down and started to let cars by as I tried to figure out what was going on. The right rear tire ended up letting go while I was crawling through Mutkurve and I pulled off behind the barrier at Steilstrecke.
With the chaos in the race, we weren’t able to get a tow back to the paddock until after the race ended which was a big bummer for my teammates Judson Holt and Denny Stripling who didn’t get to drive at all losing valuable dry race experience and seat time. Racing can be cruel and effing frustrating at times.
I sat by the side of the track with the car for over four hours until getting a ride back to the paddock in the tow truck. Some very nice fans brought me food and kept me entertained and I was able to keep my phone charged with the marshals stationed at Steilstrecke. Thank you to everyone that came by to check on me and take photos.
In the end it could have been much worse, but still was not the race we were hoping for!

Every lap in NLS is a lesson in traffic management. Fast GT3 car closing in? Be predictable and give room. Slower car ahead? Time a clean pass. Rinse, repeat dozens of times per lap for 4 hours - yeehaw 🤠

Three things to try on a wet practice day:
1. Different lines - Hunt for grip. Compare the normal dry line versus a wider line. Is there more grip off of the dry line?
2. Tire pressure - higher pressure to reduce hydroplaning, lower pressure to increase grip (find a balance for how deep the water is)
3. Brake bias - move bias to the rear overall because you have less weight transfer to the front tires with lower deceleration rates in the wet. Try to find a bias setting that allows you to brake later without getting rear locking and too much over-rotation on entry. If you keep a “dry” brake bias setting, you will likely get front locking in the wet.

Man, what a weekend racing and coaching in Germany. I’m super fortunate to get to race in NLS with this awesome team and fast BMW M4 GT4. They make it so fun and we always have a competitive car.
On Saturday, we had the tightest field for qualifying we’ve had all year. 6 cars were sub 8:40 in SP10. I set my new personal best with an 8:34.6 which put us on pole in SP10 AM, P2 overall in SP10 just 0.2s off the pole. Three cars were in the 8:34s which is freaking flying!
In the race, I got a great start (video on slide 5) and took the SP10 lead into T1. When a GT3 Audi spun in Turn 3, I was able to get by a more few Cup 2 cars that were in our starting group which helped me pull an 8s lead on the SP10 field after Lap 1. On Lap 2, I got freaking clobbered by a Cup 2 Porsche on the GP course in a divebomb that I didn’t see coming. The hit was in the right rear quarter panel and luckily the suspension wasn’t damaged. I was able to continue, but it took me a lap or so to get my s**t together and trust the car again in high-speed corners so I lost the lead and followed the No. 176 ProSport Mercedes ProSport GT4 for the rest of my stint.
Mac Harrison had an AWESOME second stint that got us the lead again after the pit time differences and great pace. We got some breaks with Code 60s and pulled a big gap during Russ’ and Alex’s upcoming stints. Ultimately, we had around a 60s lead in class when the checkered flag came out, but got to do an extra lap since the overall leading Mercedes GT3 was behind us. So 39 laps of good pace, great pit stops, 0 mistakes, and a tank-like BMW got us the overall win in SP10!

Back to the Nürburgring with BLACK FALCON and AV Racing by BLACK FALCON for the 6 Hour NLS7 this weekend!
Russ Turner, Mac Harrison, Alex Vasilescu, and I are in the No. 177 RebelDot BMW M4 GT4. This is my first race since the N24 and I’m super pumped to back at my favorite track with the best team in the business. It’s still hard to believe I get to do this stuff. I’m grateful for th3 opportunity and will send out links and updates on the race in my stories. Yeehaw 🤠
