Paralympic silver medalist Liana Mutia returned home to inspire and give back at the El Toro Fall Bash 2025, a fundraiser hosted by El Toro Nonprofit (NP) to support young and aspiring athletes.

Ms. Mutia, who trained at El Toro Judo Club under Sensei Chester Evans, credited the nonprofit for helping guide her early judo career. She brought her Paris 2024 Pralympic Silver Medal awarded and Sensei Evans showed their supporters the Order of Ikkos Medal Ms. Mutia had presented to Sensei Evans in gratitude earlier in the year. Her story underscored how crucial early community support is for athletes—especially in sports like judo, where funding for amateurs remains scarce.

The event raised money for four local student-athletes preparing for the upcoming President’s Cup in Dallas. Other attendees included rising judoka Judah Harris, Sara Golden (African Open Champion and 2028 Olympic hopeful), and Gustavo Sanchez (Pan Am Champion).

El Toro NonProfit supports student/athletes in competition ice hockey and golf. Two high school competitors, Genesis Lewis a senior at Granville Early College and Gianni Burnette a junior at Orange High School continued on from Saturday to Monday’s High School Golf Regionals in Lillington. Both young ladies advanced to the State Championship, Ms. Lewis bringing her second Regionals Championship with her.

Beyond competition, El Toro NP highlighted its mission to bridge generations and empower future athletes, from local golfers to international judo contenders—showing that community support remains vital amid the ongoing challenges of funding amateur sports.

At our 15th annual El Toro Fall Bash fundraiser on the 18th, these two young ladies competed. Monday the 20th they took that practice round and competed at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Regionals. Genesis Lewis, from South Granville High School won her second Regionals in two years and both she and Gianni Burnette will be advancing to the State Championships next week. We are very grateful that our supporters and friends were able to meet both these two young women and see what we do as an organization whose mission is to be the bridge between student athletes and opportunity. Watch this space for news on the results of next weeks competition.

El Toro Fall Bash 2025 may be over but the terrific vibe and feedback at this, our 15th year was tremendous. Thank you South Granville Country Club Club, Ms. Liz (yes, there are two!) and the club staff who made this another event for the ages. Thank you to for supporting our event once again! Thank you to our supporters, our family and friends who helped so much, and to our golfers, with special mention to the Commonwealth contingent .
A special thanks you to Liana Mutia, our own Raleigh Paralympian, 2025 African Open Gold Medalist, Judah Harris 2025 US Open Champion, and Gustavo Sanchez 2025 Pan Am Gold Medalist for attending this 15th year of fundrasising for student/athletes. El Toro Judo Club🥋.

Join Chester Evans, me, my friend Halima, our friend Kaye, and our band of supporters for some friendly competition! There will be trophies, raffles, and Jonny’s BBQ from Louisburg (15 years strong).

Our goal to help families offset competition expenses has grown over these fifteen years. We are proud of our small but impactful footprint—something that could not happen without each of you.

Celebrate your part in:
• Liana Mutia’s Paralympic journey to the 2028 Games.
• Judah Harris’ first-ever European trip to the Judo Cadet Worlds in Sofia, Bulgaria.
• Sara Golden’s recovery from injury and her training at the Olympic Training Center in Charlotte for 2028.

Celebrate your support of the journeys and dreams made possible through community outreach and amateur athletic opportunities. Our footprint may be small, but you have helped student-athletes who might otherwise never have had these chances.

Our current funding goal supports travel to the prestigious President’s Cup, held annually in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas next month, as well as early 2026 competition expenses.
