Stitching up holes in the monoflap 😭friends don’t let friends use saddle fitters who butcher their nice saddles.

A little PSA/plea: don’t let traveling saddle fitters cut/rip gaping holes in your Custom Saddlery monoflap saddles (or any monoflap saddle for that matter) to work on the flocking. I picked up this one to repair today and reflock due to the fitter balling up cheap flock and creating a lumpy mess which now has created a saddle that doesn’t sit correctly on the riders horse. Between the gaping holes and balled up flock, this ended being an expensive endeavor for the rider. I’m sharing this in hopes that word gets out and that folks lean into their Custom Brand reps to take good care of their saddles and who have been appropriately trained in safe and effective flocking methods.

See video below where I’m poking my fingers into the saddle into giant holes where there is ripped and cut leather and also ripped stitching. Bummer.

Tear down, strip old flock, reflock, and carefully stitch back together. A true, time intensive, material intensive, labor of love. A lot of folks won’t touch these old saddles. I’ll do a few. They take a lot of careful, skilled attention to not tear old leather and get them back together so that they are balanced and seams line up. Hopefully this saddle will see another decade of use.
