God morning, my brothers and sisters…you ever run out of what to say…
There was a time a while ago…I was standing in the stands at a track meet, watching my son run. He was a sophomore in high school then, and he was already one of the elite runners in the school district, good enough to be standing on the line with the top eight kids across multiple schools. That alone is something to be proud of. Just being there, just qualifying for that race, most parents would take that and celebrate it without a second thought.
But he didn't run the race he wanted to run. He placed, he was still right there with the best of the best, but it wasn't what he expected of himself. And when he crossed that finish line, his competitive fire got the better of him, and he let a swear word fly right there in front of everybody.
I froze for a second. I was proud of him and rattled by him at the same time, and I didn't trust myself to say the right thing in that moment. So instead of walking over and reacting out of frustration, I did something I don't do often enough. I picked up the phone.
I called a brother in Christ, a guy I look up to, a friend who is just a little further down the road of raising kids than I am. I told him the whole story, and then I asked him straight out, how do you deal with this. And he got quiet. I could tell he was really thinking about it, not just giving me something to say.
And then he said three words that I still think about. He said, 'I got nothing.'
He told me he was walking through the same kind of moments with his own kids. No formula, no five step plan, just honesty. And there was something about that honesty that gave me more peace than any advice could have. Because it reminded me that none of us actually have this figured out.
We are all just doing our best with what God gives us.
But then he said one more thing, and this is the part that stuck with me the most. He said, this one, you just have to chuck it up to God.
That's it. That's the whole answer. And at first I gave him a hard time about it, because I called him looking for wisdom and what I got was basically a shrug. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized that might be the wisest thing anybody has ever told me.
Because here's the truth. We spend so much energy trying to have the right answer for everything. The right response, the right parenting move, the right words in the right moment. And when we don't have it, we panic, or we react in haste, or we lean on our own understanding and end up making it worse.
This leads me to our Friday Fly-by word…TRUTH, and brings to mind Proverbs 3:5-6 which says…'trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, and in all our ways submit to him, and he will make our paths straight.' Not our paths. His paths, made straight through us, when we stop trying to white knuckle our way through every hard moment.
My friend didn't have an answer for me that day, but he had trust, and he handed that trust right over to me. And I think that's what we're called to do for each other. Not always show up with the perfect words, but show up honest, and point each other back to God when we run out of our own understanding.
So if you are in a season right now where you got nothing, where you are watching your kids or your marriage or your job and you just don't have the answer, I want you to hear this. You are not supposed to have it. That's not a failure on your part. That's an invitation to trust.
What is it in your life right now that you are still trying to figure out on your own instead of chucking it up to God?
That's it for today…think about it!
Big blessings, my friends, and go be a blessing.
