Please join us for an informal potluck at the cabana, featuring our own members-caught seafood.
July 1 marks the beginning of summer crabbing, and we are blessed with some super low tides in early July as well. What better reason to have a seafood harvesting, cooking and eating potluck?!
This is a totally spontaneous, informal, not-official Sandy Hook gathering to share marine protein and side dishes in a good old-fashioned potluck over the July 4th holiday.
9 AM to NOON—CLAMMING on the beach
Meet at the cabana at 9 am and head to the tide flats to harvest clams. Never dug a geoduck? Not a problem. Let Charlie and Henry Phillips show you how. For a preview, go to Youtube and watch Charlie’s fun 2012 video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klAYUPv9-LA&t=1s. You will need your own bucket and fishing license. Want to get serious about geoducking? Get a 2-foot long, 8-inch diameter stove pipe and a razor clam cannon as well. Return to the cabana around noon, and we will help you clean your clams.
CRABBING
JULY 1 is the first day of crabbing season. If you’re going out on Sunday, please note the super low tides at approximately 10 am on July 1 and 10:40 on July 2. If you bring Sunday-caught crabs back to the Cabana on Sunday afternoon, we will have crab cookers on hand for you to throw your crabs in.
CABANA EVENTS
9 am Clammers meet at cabana to head out to beach.
11:45 Volunteers meet to arrange tables, set up crab cookers, set up clam cookers, ice chests, etc.
Noon Clammers return. Clam cleaning and chowder making begin (we will have an induction cooktop for 2 pots, and propane cookers).
2 pm Crabbers head out to retrieve their crabs. Sandy Hook folks come to the cabana with their side dishes and wave to the crabbers heading out and returning as they pass by the pool.
3:30 pm The feast begins! The chowder is done, crabbers bring their fresh crabs and saved salmon to the cabana to cook up, and the feast starts!
