WEEKEND RECAP - BEST OF THE MIDWEST

We headed to Marion for five showcase games, rolled out of Cincinnati around 5:30am Saturday morning, thinking we had successfully outrun the storm. We had not... Apparently the storm studied film, found a better route, and flanked us somewhere around Columbus. By the time we got to Marion, it felt like 17 feet of rain had dropped and nobody packed an ark. So, we held up at Perkins, waited it out, and once the rain out was official, we pivoted. The girls spent part of their afternoon cleaning up recruiting social media and college-bound jocks profiles, learning the off-field side of the game. We knocked out equipment tweaks, helmet decals, pitch and play cards, and then got into team time: food, football, the popcorn festival, and yeah, somehow a Queensryche concert. Thanks, Professor E. People watching was certainly elite. By Sunday, we finally played ball…

Game 1: Cobras go up 2-0. Beasley (2030) gives us three steady innings, no walks. In the fourth, Steffes (2030) rips a two-run double to tie it, then Logan (2028) drops a clutch two RBI single. French (2029) takes over from there. 1 and a third, perfect, no traffic. We got punched first, didn't flinch, punched back harder.

Game 2: Hotshots go up 2-0 early. Bohan (2029) helps manufacture one with a sac bunt. Schaible (2029) ties it. Steffes (2030) helps push another across, and Habig (2029) adds breathing room with an RBI single. French (2029) gives us two more scoreless, and Beasley (2030) finishes. Same 4-2 ending. Comeback win. The wind was just silly game 2. Our outfielders were out there on an amusement ride, but they fought it all game. One of my favorite moments, McCarthur (2030) behind the plate, fires behind the runner to Lewis (2029) at third. Lewis fires it right back, rundown, out at the plate. That's practice turned instinct. Schira (2029) kept cleaning things up at first with her acrobatics.

Our pitchers as a group showed real toughness, attacked spots, kept us in both games. Catchers continue to grow, framing, blocking, controlling the game. Dia Logan (2028) came through huge in Game 1 (that’s being the spark we talk about). We’d be remiss if we didn’t shout out Lewis (2029) [.500/.526/.500] and Habig (2029) [.462/.588/.462]. Those two keep sneaking in extra swings outside of practice together - quiet work, and it's showing up in the game.

There is plenty we need to clean up, but we’re improving every day and our team is hungry. New group, still installing, still figuring it out, but we trailed 2-0 twice, we won 4-2 twice, and we saw a bunch of growth. We are also pretty beat up, so today is for recovery. Get well soon to “BK” Kavanaugh (2028) who’s dealing with some arm soreness, but still found ways to help with the bat, and for good measure, wore two HBPs.

So yeah… 17 feet of rain, recruiting work, helmet decals, team bonding, death metal, hurricane fly balls, two HBP selfies, and two pretty good wins. 2-0 on the weekend. Rest up, get healthy, back to work.

Nobody cares, work harder.

SPRING TRAINING: COMPLETE

Yesterday was a mix of good and bad, but mostly, it was incredibly positive.

We started slowly as the back of our baseball card would historically say. Brooklyn Kavanaugh (BK) pitched a gem, but a few defensive mistakes created some chip damage, and an offense that never really got out of neutral made it hurt a little more. We dropped Game 1 to 16U Hawks - Webb, 8-0. Not exactly the opening scene we had scripted, but the score truly wasn’t indicative of the game played. Also, way to go BK, battling while recovering from an illness that had her sidelined all week!

But that’s why we called this thing Spring Training. Regroup. Adjust. Go again... Game 2, we did exactly that.

Behind a 5-inning shutout performance from THE Alexa Beasley (7 K, 2 BB), the bats came alive. We pounded out 15 hits and rolled to a 16-0 win over 18U Outcast. Truth be told, we did threaten them (with bucket drills) if they did not lock in. They clearly hate bucket drills - and respond to threats

Anabelle Schira led the offensive assault, going 2-for-2 with SIX RBI. “The kid’s a machine, Louie.” And somewhere during that game, [I hope 🤞] we found our spark.

Then came Game 3.

This was probably the most complete game we’ve played as a team in a long time. The work these girls have put in, combined with the additions of Dia Logan, Brooklyn Kavanaugh and Kendall McCarthur, finally gave everyone a glimpse of exactly how dangerous this group can be when it all comes together.

Maddie French led the way in the circle, going 4 innings and allowing just 1 earned run with 4 K and 2 BB, earning the win over 16U Hawks - Cook, 7-1.

BK got us started in the first, dropping a two-out fly-ball single and scoring Beasley from second to make it 1-0. Then came a defensive battle. Both teams played tight until Cook tied it in the bottom of the third. For a second, the wheels looked a little wobbly. Then Kendall McCarthur said, “NO BABY, NO.” BK went home on a bunt attempt. Kendall slapped the tag and immediately rifled the ball to third to catch the advancing runner. DOUBLE PLAY! (shoutout to Dia Logan for being exactly where she was supposed to be to finish it.) That play felt like somebody pulled the plug on the other dugout.

Then the top of the fourth happened… Apparently, our girls decided they were hot, tired, hungry and officially done playing around. Rilynn Habig busted it open with a hard ground ball into right, plating two. Then Maddie French hit them with the “LOOK WHAT I CAN DO” and blasted another into the gap to help stretch it to 6-1. Then Zoe Schaible reminded everybody why speed kills, laying down an absolutely beautiful drag bunt to bring home another. 7-1 Hawks.

But, we couldn’t leave without a little Banana Ball of our own. Meghan Lewis makes a diving snag… The ball pops loose… And somehow lands in the waiting mitt of Alison Ibold.

Spring Training ends 2-1. More importantly, it ends with us looking a whole lot more like US.

Now it gets real. We have one practice left before opening the fall season next weekend in Lexington, Kentucky.

PLEASE DONT SKIP THIS PART.

What these girls are about to do deserves some perspective. They’re beginning a grueling 11-week fall season that will put them in a different city at least 7 of those 11 weekends. That’s on top of Tuesday practices, hitting lessons, pitching lessons, fielding work, dailies, strength and conditioning, school/homework, family, friends, etc.. And through all of it, they’re expected to remain student-athletes first and maintain great GPAs.

This isn’t for the faint of heart.

We post the pictures, the wins, the big hits, the smiles and the celebrations because those are the fun parts. What people don’t see is everything underneath them. The late nights, the missed weekends, the bruises, the soreness, the ice packs/braces/bandaids - the rehab. Playing through aches and pains. Getting extra reps when nobody is watching or cheering for you. Giving up free time that most teenagers get to have. Then, waking up Monday morning and going back to school.

Yeah, it’s fun. Actually, it’s incredible. Someday, these girls are going to look back on this journey, laugh about the insanity of it, tell these stories over and over, and hopefully realize that somewhere along the way, softball taught them something much bigger than softball. Because the things in life that are truly worth chasing usually aren’t convenient. They demand something from you. Your time. Your comfort. Your energy. Pain. Sacrifice. It’s exactly what makes finally getting there mean so much.

Welcome to Ohio Hawks 16U!

This page is about a lot more than wins, losses, and softball.

We have an incredible group of young women who have trusted us to be a small part of their journey. Our goal is to help them become better softball players, but more importantly, to help them become confident, hardworking young women who understand what it means to compete, be a great teammate, handle adversity, and earn what they want.

We’re proud of the families who have come together to make this team possible, and we’re incredibly excited about what lies ahead.

We’ll use this page to share the journey, celebrate our players, and hopefully make some memories along the way.

This is just the beginning.

Nobody cares. Work harder.

Go Hawks!
