We get a lot of questions from new and returning families. We thought we’d put some together to answer any questions you might have. Let us know if you have more questions!
Hawthorn Hurricanes Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How often will my child have practice?
A: Practices are 4 times per week with an optional stroke clinic on Wednesdays.
Q: My child has days that they can’t make it to practice- is that a problem?
A: We understand that all our swim families are busy. There is no issue with missing practices. Come as often as you are able to! There are no attendance requirements.
Q: How often are swim meets?
A: Meets are 1-2 times per week on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. They usually start at 6:30 and are about 1 ½ to 2 hours. Swimmers do come early to warm up.
Q: My child wants to swim- but isn’t sure about swim meets. We would miss several meets due to other sports or a vacation. Is that a problem?
A: Summer is a busy time for many families. We understand that not everyone can come to every event. While we encourage kids to come and swim at the meets (they are fun!!)- we understand that people often cannot come. This is totally fine! There is no meet attendance requirement.
Q: When I went to register, I saw that there were requirements to volunteer, Can you tell me more about that?
A: Swim meets are a fun part of swim team- but they are not possible with help from our parents. We ask that all families of full time swimmers volunteer at least 4 meets. All the jobs are pretty straightforward- and we will happily show you the ropes of any position you are assigned! You will still be able to watch your kids swim while you help!
Q: My child is 5, can they join the swim team?
A: Yes, if your child is 5 by 6/1/26 or will be old enough to enter Kindergarten this upcoming school year and has some water experience, they are welcome to sign up as a minnow.
Q: My child has not swam in a few years, can they still join?
A: Yes, once your child is registered, they will be asked to attend an evaluation with our coaches to see what practice group will be the best fit for their abilities!
Q: Does my child need any special equipment to be on swim team?
A: All they need is a swimsuit, a towel, and a pair of goggles. Goggles do swim team cannot cover the swimmers nose. Team suits are not required. We have a team store through Swim Outlet.
