Okay so… I’m 22 years deep into racing triathlon, and at some point I just stopped racing year-round. I know, sounds kind of backwards coming from someone who’s been doing this forever but hear me out …
After so many season of swim, bike, run, rinse, repeat, I began to get injured more frequently, didn’t see as much progress, and honestly … I just wasn’t having fun anymore.
So, I started switching it up. Prone paddling, jiujitsu and kettlebells have been favorites over the years. At the moment, I’m playing with the HYROX format.
It’s a blast to walk into a gym with zero pace goals, no splits to hit, just… pick up something heavy and put it down. I forgot how much I needed that.
Every athlete I coach who tries something totally outside triathlon between race builds — lifting, whatever — comes back stronger and healthier. And they’re just happier doing it too.
So yeah. These kettlebells aren’t taking anything away from my endurance goals. They’re actually keeping me going AND keeping the stoke alive.
