Brookwood Park was the setting for the tonight’s opening round district contest between the Clare Pioneers and Grant Tigers. After giving up a goal in the final 2 seconds of the opening half, the Lady Pioneers found themselves within 40 minutes of elimination on their home turf. A determined effort in the second kept them within striking distance until Reagan Somers turned the Tigers over deep in Pioneer territory, nudging the ball to Ivy Russell who would take care of the rest, sending the ball past the Tigers keeper to square the contest at 1 goal a piece. The score would remain knotted until the end of regulation, requiring 2 extra periods to determine who would advance. Midway through the first overtime period, Ivy Russell would be awarded a free kick just outside the 18, and made it count, sending the ball to the upper left corner for her second goal of the night and a 2-1 lead. The defense would make sure that lead would hold for the final 16 minutes of the contest as the Lady Pioneers won to advance and move on to the second round of the district tournament.
Up next, Howard City Tri County in Reed City next Tuesday night (5/26 @ 5PM).
