Dater High School Chess Club

Greetings!

The Dater High School Chess Championship was an unqualified success. We had ten players (three girls!) and they did well. It’s gratifying to see how much they have improved since August.

Well, without further ado, here are the results.

2026 Dater High School Chess Champion
Avante Higgins, 10th grade 4-0

Second Place
Oliver Ramirez, 10th grade 3-1

Middle School Champion
Dominique Allen, 7th grade 3-1

Dater Ladies Champion
Av’ona Higgins 9th grade 2.5 - 1.5

It was Dominique’s first time coming to chess club!!! Amazing. I’m giddy at the prospect of working with him for five years!

Cougar Chess Club News!

The Dater Chess Team had an impressive showing at the Scholastic Chess Tournament at Princeton High School. The final tally was 14 wins and 8 losses.

In Category 5, beginner, both Lennon “anti-gravity” Newton and “Ready” Rose Peterson got their first tournament wins. Oliver “Martini” Ramirez scored two clever victories. “Treacherous” Tre Edwards bagged fourth place and secured a medal with three wins against a lone defeat.

The two students entered in the Category 4 novice division were phenomenal with a combined 7-1 record.

Early “In The Morning” Dorsey took third overall with three wins and Avante “Aviator” Higgins mollywhopped the field with four checkmates and a perfect score to win the division.

Thanks to all of you for your support and contributions. The Cougars will be on the attack and not taking any smack at the city championships on March 14 at TQL Stadium! Be well and stay warm.

The Dater Chess Club mourns the passing of Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky. Losing him at 29 is a tragedy for the chess community and society in general. He was phenomenal and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace.

Naroditsky won the Under 12 World Youth Championship in 2007 and the US Junior Championship in 2013, the same year he earned his grandmaster title at age 17. Naroditsky participated in the U.S. Chess Championship five times, defeating then world No. 2 Fabiano Caruana in their 2021 match.

The grandmaster has competed in the Louisiana State Championship and Iowa Open this month. He won the latter by beating a 13-year-old.
