You took care of everyone else. Who is taking care of your retirement?
I was coaching a school administrator who is now 60 when I asked her a simple question: What is your plan for retirement?
The question opened a much bigger conversation.
She had spent years showing up for everyone else. Family needs. Children. Work. Emergencies. Responsibilities that could not wait.
But her own future had been postponed so many times that retirement was suddenly much closer than it felt prepared for.
For many women, this is the caregiver retirement gap. It is the quiet cost of putting everyone else's immediate needs ahead of your own long term future.
Maybe you stepped back from work, went part time, or paused your retirement contribution. Not because you did not care about your future. You were caring for everyone in front of you.
Here is the truth: being everyone's safety net cannot come at the cost of your own future. You can honor your parents, support your family, and still make room for your retirement goals.
One practical step: treat your retirement contribution like a bill. Pay it before responding to the next request. Start with what fits your budget, then review it regularly as your circumstances change. This is general financial education, not investment advice.
