My favorite weekend…

Freshman year at BC I remember thinking “that should be me” repeatedly as runners passed by on heartbreak hill.

I could never have imagined where that would lead

Over 150 marathons later this Eagle is continually soaring to new heights

My ❤️ is not here

Though stress levels were high from more complex logistics than most of my trips, I’d really been looking forward to pacing ! This would be a huge group and crowd energy next level. Lots of PRs, or PBs here. I couldn’t imagine a better 💯th pacing gig, wearing a backpack and flag this time, instead of a 🪧

And then Saturday night I got an unwelcome message - 🐈‍⬛ Trooper had passed

Just like that, all of the joy, the excitement… it was gone. With no sleep and my 💔 in another place I had to execute on marathonings biggest stage. It was an exercise in stoicism, or pretending to be such. I nailed the pace target with metronome precision. Despite the crowded course requiring fancy footwork, this was nearly flawless. My feelings would not control me, rather I control and channel them. My anger, my grief, my sadness - 🐈‍⬛ Trooper would have wanted my success, and so for three and a half hours… for three and a half hours I faked it

My krewe *is* my closest family, so this news was devastating. I’ll go to great lengths to spoil my krewe, even while I struggle with essentials myself.

Meanwhile the pace group had zero idea how broken I was. This was probably the hardest emotional challenge I’ve ever faced - with zero time to process it. Still I kept my eyes dry from the moment I entered the start area until just after I crossed the finish line - except for one brief lapse as I passed a charity runner. ‘Running for all dogs and cats’… I couldn’t hold it and the forced ‘joy’ slipped away briefly. I’m still human

There was actually one bit on the course that did legitimately get me fired up - I saw a BC 🦅 sign on the sideline. One truly impassioned “BOSTON COLLEGE!!!” followed… I’ve always held team in higher regard than self… and then it was back to pretending

Finally 3:29:38 after crossing the start line, my job was done. I broke down 😿 😿 😿 . These eyes will never see my little 🐈‍⬛ troublemaker again.

Boston bound!

No better way to start April than punching a whole tickets 🎟️ to the 🦄 , and this that’s exactly what I’m celebrating! Getting to race was quite the mission, but it was literally all downhill from there! Didn’t get married and remember it all. Now headed home with hungover quads… ‘twas a great weekend!

✈️ Travel:
Started off with a challenging hitch 👍. Nature provided a deluge of difficulties as I made my way to the airport through the 🌧️ downpour and flooding. Both flights were delayed 🛫 but I finally made it to Vegas around midnight, race morning! Delayed transit busses and I was finally at the race pickup. The shuttle 🚍 to the start line was a party bus, complete with stripper pole. Getting to the start is the hardest part! 😹

☀️Conditions:
My 8th was memorable, with the weather now on our side. It was around freezing 🥶 at the start, but that’s a good thing. Some cross wind, but also gently pushing us along 💨 so racers were amping up their 🎯 goal times.

🏁 Course:
In typical REVEL fashion, this was a blazing fast course with over 5,000 of elevation lost along the way. No major hills, with even the last couple miles a gradual drop. After flying down the mountain for the first 20 something miles, even that felt like running up a cliff!

🪧 Pace Group
The 3️⃣ hour group was quite large. I’d expected a good number with me, but the sheer quantity blew away expectations 🔥. In the end there were 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ between 2:50 and 3:00 🤩!!! Started down the mountain with several dozen in my group, and quite a few launched even in the early miles. The group was confident, and much of the race I was *not* at the front as racers debated taking off ahead. With the strength of the group, and the reality of Boston cutoffs, I quickly decided to target a low 2:59 finish as that’d best position everyone for success. Most finished way ahead, others used the sign to still secure that sub 3️⃣! I finished just a few seconds faster than ideal, but this was definitely a success. The BQ -15 secures my Boston 2026 spot as well.

are you working on a BQ?
