One of our Participants enjoyed a successful evening of night fishing on the Beaverkill, taking advantage of prime conditions as trout became active after sunset. As darkness settled over the river, anglers were rewarded with several fish and exciting takes on the surface.

Beyond the catches, the evening offered a peaceful and memorable experience, with participants sharing time on one of fly fishing's most historic rivers. The combination of rising trout, cool mountain air, and camaraderie made for a truly special night on the water.

Participants enjoyed a successful week of fly fishing in the Catskill Mountains, landing beautiful trout while exploring some of the most historic waters in the country. Whether it was a first fish on a fly rod or another memorable catch, each fish represented patience, perseverance, and time well spent on the water.

More importantly, the trip provided opportunities for fellowship, healing, and creating lasting memories among fellow veterans. The trout were a bonus, the real catch was the camaraderie shared along the riverbanks of the Catskills.

For many disabled veterans, fly fishing is about much more than catching fish. Standing in moving water requires focus, patience, and being present in the moment. The distractions of everyday life fade away as attention shifts to the current, the cast, and the possibility of the next rise.

Fly fishing provides a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and connection. It helps veterans reconnect with the outdoors, build lasting friendships, and find peace in places where words are often unnecessary. The river doesn't care about limitations, it simply offers an opportunity to keep moving forward, one cast at a time.

That is the power of programs like Project Healing Waters and why time spent on the water can be so meaningful for those who have served.

Participants from Project Healing Waters recently traveled to the Catskills for a week of fly fishing, fellowship, and camaraderie. From the historic waters of the Beaverkill to the scenic stretches of the Neversink, participants spent their days pursuing wild trout while enjoying the healing power of nature and the bonds formed on the water.

The fish were memorable, but the friendships, shared experiences, and time spent standing together in these legendary rivers made the trip truly special.

Standing in the water, participants take a moment to study their surroundings before making the next cast. Fly fishing is more than just catching fish with bugs, it's about reading the water, watching the currents, looking for signs of feeding trout, and staying connected to the natural world around them. Every cast begins with patience, observation, and preparation, as anglers focus on the details that can lead to that next unforgetable catch. It's in these quiet moments on the water where skill, mindfulness, and the anticipation of a tight line all come together.

Tonight we had an incredible fly tying session! It’s always an honor to spend time around such a great group of veterans, anglers, and creative minds who all share the same passion for the art of fly fishing. The room was filled with laughter, stories, and the sound of bobbins spinning as everyone worked on their flies and shared techniques at the vise. From Wooly Buggers to talking fishing and fly tying, it was one of those evenings that reminds you how much this community means. Fly tying is more than just making flies, it’s therapy, friendship, creativity, and camaraderie. We are grateful for everyone who came out tonight and made it such a memorable session. Looking forward to the next one already.

Participant Brian landing a trout on the Riverbound trip was a perfect reminder of what Project Healing Waters is all about, healing, fellowship, and time on the water. Huge thanks to Roy, one of the guides with Project Healing Waters, for helping create memories that go far beyond catching fish. Sometimes the best therapy is a fly rod, a river, and good people around you.
