New football coach in Fredonia.
Fredonia USD 484 is proud to announce the hiring of Lucus Lanning as the next Head High School Football Coach for the Yellowjackets.
Coach Lanning is a native of Cherryvale, Kansas, and brings a strong background in both education and athletics to Fredonia. Following high school, he attended Independence Community College, where he played football for two years before continuing his playing career at McPherson College. While at McPherson, Lanning completed his collegiate football career and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation.
Since graduating, Coach Lanning has dedicated his professional career to mentoring young people and developing successful student-athletes both on and off the field. His coaching journey began at Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas, where he served as Quarterbacks Coach and Defensive Coordinator during the 2018-2019 school year. He then spent two years at Atchison High School coaching quarterbacks and defensive backs while continuing to build a reputation as a passionate teacher and coach.
In 2022, Lanning advanced to the collegiate level as a Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach at Highland Community College. He continued to gain valuable experience at Bishop LeBlond Catholic High School in 2023, helping guide the program to a State Runner-Up finish. In 2024, he served as Quarterbacks Coach and Defensive Coordinator at St. Joseph Truman Middle School before returning to his alma mater, Cherryvale High School, in 2025 as Defensive Backs Coach and Special Teams Coordinator.
In addition to his coaching experience, Coach Lanning has taught Physical Education at both the elementary and high school levels. His experiences as an educator and coach have reinforced his belief in the transformative power of education and athletics. He is committed to creating an environment where excellence in the classroom is valued just as highly as excellence on the field, helping students develop the skills and work ethic necessary for success in all aspects of life.
Coach Lanning and his wife, Whitney, are the proud parents of two daughters and are excited to become members of the Fredonia community. As they begin this new chapter, the Lanning family looks forward to building lasting relationships with students, families, and fans while embracing the traditions and strong sense of community that make Fredonia such a special place.
Please join us in welcoming Coach Lucus Lanning and his family to Fredonia USD 484 and Yellowjacket Nation. We are excited for the future of Fredonia Football and look forward to the positive impact Coach Lanning will have on our students, athletes, and community.
Welcome to Fredonia, Coach Lanning!
