LKN Kids MTB Club

LKN Kids MTB Club The LKN Kids MTB Club will meet monthly at a local mtb trail to help kids learn to become better mtb'ers while having fun with friends. Join us!

My son Connor and I have started a local mtb club! Details:

We’ll meet once a month (or maybe more?) at a local trail (e.g. North Meck, Fisher Farm, LKN State Park, WWC, Sherman), have a 30-minute training session on a chosen topic, then hit the trail for a lap or two as a group. The idea is to teach the kids to be better mtb’ers. No racing, just riding. Not necessary for parents to ride but that would be better of course. Richard Kirkman

Folks-
As you know, the weather hasn't been cooperative and most local mtb trails have been closed for the month of February. We hope the weather improves over the coming weeks so we can get back out there for Ride No. 4. Stay tuned to this page and we will post ride details soon.

Thanks,
Richard Kirkman

Update on Ride No. 3 - The Whitewater Center trails are now open so we'll meet there tomorrow afternoon at 2:00PM. We'll ride the green Lake Loop and a small section of the blue trail.

Meet at the covered picnic area and restrooms at the far corner of the upper gravel parking lot. There's a $5 parking fee. See ya there.

RIDE NO. 3 - SUNDAY, JANUARY 18, 2:00PM TO 4:00PM

Our third ride is scheduled for this Sunday, assuming the trails dry out in time. Depending on which trail is open, we will plan to meet at Lake Norman State Park or the whitewater center. I'll post further ride details as the week progresses. Please plan to join us.

Thanks,
Richard K.

Hi Folks-
Our second mtb ride is planned for this Sunday, 2:00PM to 4:00PM. For now the forecast looks excellent. Low to mid-60's and full sun. Our ride location this month will be the Lake Norman State Park - Monbo trail (6.25 miles) in Troutman, NC. Ride plan is below. Please send me any questions. Hope you can make it!

Ride Plan:
- Introductions
- Training topic for this month: Bicycle Condition & Fit – we’ll make sure our bikes are in good working condition (i.e. brakes adjusted, shifting smoothly, proper air pressure, etc.) and we’ll ensure our bikes are properly fit to our bodies by adjusting saddle heights and stem lengths. I’ll have tools and a work stand but would encourage you to bring yours if available to help speed up the process.
- Review the route. We’ll be riding the Monbo trail.
- Go for a ride. The more experienced riders will lead out, followed by the newcomers, then the parents and myself.

Preferred equipment: As with anything, having the proper equipment makes for a better experience. Of course a helmet is a must. Not all helmets are created equal either. A bike specific helmet works better for trail riding than a skate-boarding helmet, with more fit adjustability and vented openings. Beyond that, padded gloves, padded shorts, riding jersey and a camelbak or water bottle & cage can improve your riding experience. Consider packing a snack as well for the mid-ride break. At a minimum, your child will need a bike with a front shock and multiple gears. BMX-style single speeds will not work very well on a mtb trail due to the constantly changing terrain. Those bikes will make for a miserable first mtb ride experience.

Lastly, I really hope to see parents on their bikes riding with us. This is a beginner ride so please consider joining us. Please let me know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you Sunday.
