Two days ago I made the difficult decision to formally remove myself and my team from Checkmat. Effective immediately, we will no longer compete under the Checkmat banner, and I will no longer represent the organization publicly.
This decision has not been made lightly. I want to first thank Master Leo Vieira. To my knowledge, he has always been a friend, mentor, and someone who gave me opportunities that helped shape my journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. My decision to step away is in no way a reflection of him personally. Rather, it is a response to the serious allegations that have been made by victims toward members and founders within the organization. As a leader, a father, and a husband, I have to make choices that allow me to look my family in the eye and stand firmly in my values.
I also want to be clear about something: no organization is immune to wrongdoing. Whether in sports, politics, business, or religion, there will always be individuals capable of harmful actions. During my time at Checkmat, I experienced far more good than bad , a hundredfold and I will always be grateful for the relationships, lessons, and memories built there.
However, with the weight of these allegations and the responsibility I carry toward my students, my academy, and my family, stepping away is the only path that aligns with who I am and what I stand for.
Going forward, our team will be known as Real American Grappling. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for us , one built on the same hard work, intensity and culture that has always defined our academy. In addition, I will be creating a new association in the near future alongside TNT Martial Arts. More details and a formal announcement on that will be coming soon.
To my students and supporters: our mission, our culture, and our commitment to growth and respect remain unchanged. We move forward together ; stronger and focused on building something that reflects our values every day.
